Strong Second Half Lifts Rams Past Purchase

Purchase, N.Y. - In a Skyline Conference women's basketball game on Thursday evening, Farmingdale State outscored Purchase College 30-18 in the second half en route to the 56-44 road victory. With the win, FSC improved to 4-10 overall and 4-5 in the conference.

Trailing 5-2 in the early going, the Rams used an 8-2 run, which featured 3's from both junior guard Nia Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Jami Cardenas (Bay Shore, N.Y.), to take a 10-7 advantage. 

Purchase (7-6, 5-3 Skyline) trailed 15-13 at the start of the second quarter and used a jumper from Alfa DeJesus (Bronx, N.Y.) and five points by Shadai Plowden (Yonkers, N.Y.) to open up a five-point edge, 20-15.

Farmingdale State quickly responded with a Miller 3-pointer and jumpers from both freshman guard Mackenzie Tierney (Levittown, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Alexis Hunter (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to regain a two-point lead, 22-20. Over the final 5:46 of the half, Purchase held a slight 6-4 advantage as the game was tied at 26-26 heading into the third quarter.

After Panthers' senior guard Amber Yarter (Albany, N.Y.) opened the third with a 3-pointer, the Rams responded with a Stacy Papantoniou (Whitestone, N.Y.) layup and two free-throws from sophomore guard Destiny Hurt (Long Beach, N.Y.) to go in front, 31-30.

With the game tied at 38-38 with 23 seconds left in the quarter, Hunter tallied a layup to put FSC up by two.

Over the first 5:47 of the fourth quarter, Farmingdale State outscored Purchase, 9-0, as they opened up an 11-point advantage, 49-38. After Purchase hit a 3-pointer on their next possession, Hurt recorded four straight points to put FSC ahead, 53-41, with 2:41 left.

The Rams would hold the Panthers to just three points the rest of the way as they went on for the conference victory, 56-44.

Miller registered game-high's with 17 points and seven assists, while Hunter tallied 12 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two assists. Hurt finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Farmingdale State.

Purchase was led by sophomore guard Dejeana Peoples (New York, N.Y.) and Plowden, who tallied 14 and 13 points, respectively.

FSC next travels to play a conference game at St. Joseph's-Long Island on Saturday, January 12th at 1:00 p.m.
