Farmingdale State - 87, Sarah Lawrence - 57
Farmingdale, N.Y. - Farmingdale State junior guard Nia Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied the single game school record for assists after dishing out 14 in the 87-57 Skyline Conference win over Sarah Lawrence College this afternoon. The FSC women's basketball team led by as many as 38 points in the second half and improved to 2-9 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Senior guard Selena LaFranca (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored the first 12 points for the Rams as she hit four 3-pointers to put the FSC ahead, 12-6, with 5:37 left to play in the opening quarter. After a SLC (0-11, 0-7) free-throw cut the deficit to five, Farmingdale State followed with a 9-0 run which saw six points from sophomore forward Alexis Hunter (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to extend the advantage to 21-9.
Leading 30-12 early in the second quarter, sophomore guard Destiny Hurt (Long Beach, N.Y.) scored the next eight FSC points as the Rams went out in front by 22 with 3:51 left on the clock. Farmingdale State took a 40-24 advantage into the break after shooting 47-percent from the field in the half.
In the third quarter, FSC outscored the Gryphons 30-9 and were led by Hurt's nine points as they opened up a 70-33 lead. In the fourth, Sarah Lawrence recorded the first seven points to cut the deficit to 30. The Rams would hold at least a 30-point edge over the final 8:02 en route to the 87-57 victory.
Miller's 14 assists tied the school record previously set by Dankery Perez on December 1st, 2007 at Mount Saint Vincent. Hurt, in only her third game at Farmingdale State, tallied a team-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while LaFranca finished the day with 14 points. Hunter registered a double-double on 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with four blocks, three steals and two assists.
The Gryphons were led by senior guard Taryn Penna (Sparta, N.J.) who scored a game-high 25 points.
Farmingdale State next will host Mount Saint Mary in a conference game on Saturday, January 5th at 1:00 p.m.
