NYU - 66, Farmingdale State - 42
New York, N.Y. - In their first game at the NYU Holiday Classic, the Farmingdale State women's basketball team fell to host-school New York University, 66-42. The Rams dropped to 1-8 overall, while the Violets improved to 6-2.
FSC jumped out to a quick 4-0 advantage just 2:15 into the game on back-to-back layups from junior guard Nia Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman guard Mackenzie Tierney (Levittown, N.Y.). NYU responded by scoring the next 18 points to take a 14-point edge with 1:56 left in the first. Farmingdale State junior forward Christina Rayfield (Commack, N.Y.) knocked down a pair of free-throws to close the quarter as the Rams entered the second trailing, 18-6.
The Violets opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer by sophomore forward Katie Foos (Rumson, N.J.) to extend the lead to 21-6. FSC sophomore guard Destiny Hurt (Long Beach, N.Y.) followed with a layup to cut the deficit to 13 but NYU would use a 10-0 run to open up a 31-8 advantage.
The Rams trailed 36-12 at the halftime break and opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Jami Cardenas (Bay Shore, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to 21. Foos answered with five straight points to give the Violets a 41-15 advantage.
NYU led by 31, 53-22, at the end of three quarters and despite being outscored 20-13 in the fourth, held on for the 66-42 non-conference victory.
Miller and Hurt each recorded nine points in the loss, while Cardenas and Tierney finished with six points apiece. Rayfield and freshman guard Stacy Papantoniou (Whitestone, N.Y.) each added four points off the bench.
Foos led the way for NYU with a game-high 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting.
FSC next plays non-conference opponent Mount Union tomorrow, December 30th at 12:00 p.m.
