Farmingdale State - 61, Yeshiva - 56
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The FSC women's basketball team earned their first win of the season with tonight's 61-56 home victory over Yeshiva. The Rams now stand at 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the Skyline Conference, while the Maccabees are 5-5, 3-4.
Tied 2-2 in the opening minutes, FSC used a Christina Rayfield (Commack, N.Y.) jumper along with a layup and free-throw by junior guard Nia Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to take a five-point lead. After the Maccabees cut the deficit to 9-7 with 3:22 left in the first, Farmingdale State closed the quarter on a 7-2 run to go on top, 16-9.
FSC sophomore forward Kelsey Voiklis (Commack, N.Y.) hit a layup to open the second quarter before Yeshiva went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 18-17 with 5:59 remaining. The Rams responded with eight unanswered points to bring the advantage to nine and later went into the break leading by 10, 29-19.
Trailing 32-25 midway through the third quarter, the Maccabees used a Nicole Bick (Edison, N.J.) 3-pointer and layup on their next two possessions to close within two, 32-30. Farmingdale State again answered the YU run with seven straight points including 3's by both Miller and sophomore guard Jami Cardenas (Bay Shore, N.Y.).
With 6:23 left to play in the game and the Maccabees down 44-39, Bick hit a 3-pointer to pull Yeshiva within two. A pair of Bick free-throws with just under three minutes remaining cut the FSC advantage to 48-46 but the Rams followed with a Selena LaFranca (Smithtown, N.Y.) 3-pointer and layup by sophomore forward Alexis Hunter (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to take a seven point advantage.
Yeshiva would cut the Farmingdale State advantage to two twice down the stretch but were unable to regain the lead as the Rams earned their first win of the season.
LaFranca scored a career-high 16 points, while Cardenas had 13 points, four rebounds and four steals. Miller finished the night with 12 points and a game-high seven assists and Hunter tallied nine points, 12 rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks.
The Maccabees were led by Bick who recorded a game-high 27 points, while Alge had nine points, six assists and 20 boards in the loss.
Farmingdale State returns to action on Saturday, December 29th when they travel to Hunter College for the NYU Invitational. The Rams will play NYU on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and follow with a game against Mount Union on Sunday at noon.
