Farmingdale State - 87, St. Joseph's-Brooklyn - 74
Farmingdale, N.Y. - Farmingdale State senior guard Liz Durchhalter (Franklin Square, N.Y.) broke the school record for 3-point field goals in a game in the Rams' 87-74 defeat of St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Tuesday evening. Durchhalter knocked down nine 3-pointers, besting the previous record of eight that was set back in 2004. In addition to the individual record, the Farmingdale State women's basketball team broke the school record by recording 18 total 3's, beating the previous record of 15 from last year. With the win, FSC improved to an even 10-10 overall and 9-4 in conference play.
Leading 8-4 just over a minute into the contest, Durchhalter hit her first 3 of the game to extend the Rams advantage to seven. The Bears (7-12, 5-7 Skyline) would respond as they scored the game's next 11 points to take a four-point edge, 15-11.
After an Angeline Klein (Levittown, N.Y.) 3 cut the Farmingdale State deficit to just one, a Kaelyn Ward (East Hampton, N.Y.) jumper, Alexis Antonacci (Plainview, N.Y.) layup and another 3 by Durchhalter gave FSC a 21-15 advantage with three minutes left in the first quarter.
The Rams led 32-24 with 8:03 left in the second quarter and outscored St. Joe's-Brooklyn 18-3 over the remainder of the half as they went into the break leading by 23, 50-27.
On the first possession of the third quarter, Durchhalter knocked down a 3, assisted by Antonacci, to increase the Farmingdale State advantage to 26. After a layup by Bears junior center Caitlyn Staab (Lynnbrook, N.Y.), Antonacci hit a 3 and Essence Casey (Huntington Station, N.Y.) tallied a layup to give the Rams their largest lead of the game, 58-29.
The Bears cut the deficit to 22, 62-40, with 5:36 left in the third but a steal by Casey and an assist from Antonacci allowed Durchhalter to produce another 3 and put FSC back up by 25.
Farmingdale State led by 21 at the end of the third and despite being outscored 20-12 in the fourth, the Rams were able to hold on for the 13-point conference victory, 87-74.
Durchhalter shot 9-for-17 from behind the arc and was a perfect 2-for-2 at the free-throw line as she produced a game-high 29 points. Antonacci recorded a double-double with 24 points (9-for-14 shooting) and a season-high 11 assists, while Ward tallied 15 points, 10 rebounds and a game-high four steals.
For St. Joe's, junior guard Victoria Porcasi (Franklin Square, N.Y.) registered a team-high 26 points, while Staab totaled 23 points, 11 rebounds and two steals in the loss.
Farmingdale State will now travel to Sarah Lawrence College for a Skyline Conference game on Thursday, February 1st at 6:00 p.m.
