Second Half Defense Leads FSC to Victory at St. Joseph's-LI

Patchogue, N.Y. - Farmingdale State trailed 41-28 at the break and outscored St. Joseph's-LI 35-14 in the second half to earn the 63-55 conference win on Saturday afternoon. The FSC women's basketball team recorded their fourth straight victory and improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in Skyline action.

After the Golden Eagles (1-6, 0-4) extended their advantage to 46-30 early in the third, Farmingdale State's Kaelyn Ward (East Hampton, N.Y.) hit a layup and free-throw and Tyra Harrison (Baldwin, N.Y.) followed with a basket to cut the deficit to 46-35.

Trailing 49-37 with 3:55 left in the third, the Rams closed the quarter on a 10-0 run to pull within two, 49-47. FSC outscored St. Joe's-LI 19-8 in the quarter as junior forward Essence Casey (Huntington Station, N.Y.) led the way with seven points.

The Golden Eagles held a one-point advantage, 53-52, with 5:20 remaining before back-to-back layups from Chasity Byrd (Roslyn, N.Y.) and Ward put Farmingdale State on top, 56-53. After a Jackie Zizzo (Bethpage, N.Y.) layup on St. Joe's next possession, the Rams closed the game with seven unanswered points to cap off the 63-55 comeback victory. FSC held the Golden Eagles to only six points in the final quarter.

Harrison poured in a game-high 20 points on 9-of-17 shooting and added six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Ward scored a career-high 16 points to go along with six boards and a game-high five steals, while Casey added 12 points and four rebounds for the Rams.

For St. Joe's-LI, Alicia Indence (Centereach, N.Y.), Danielle Gehring (New Suffolk, N.Y.) and Zizzo each tallied 12 points in the loss.

FSC will now travel to Albertus Magnus for a non-conference game on Monday, December 12th at 7:00 p.m. In the first meeting between these two teams on November 20th, the Rams earned a 72-64 win.
