FSC Rolls Past Merchant Marine in Conference Opener

Kings Point, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's basketball team led 35-12 at halftime en route to the 67-48 Skyline Conference victory over Merchant Marine this evening in Kings Point, N.Y. The Rams improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Skyline, while the Mariners dropped to 1-2, 0-1.

Leading 11-4 with 5:04 remaining in the first, FSC closed the quarter on a 12-2 run capped off by a Charnae Jenkins (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) 3-pointer with two seconds remaining to extend the advantage to 23-6.

After Merchant Marine opened the second quarter with a Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) layup, the Rams answered with nine unanswered points to go ahead, 32-8. FSC took a 23-point lead into the break as junior guard Tyra Harrison (Baldwin, N.Y.) tallied a team-high eight points after shooting 4-of-5 from the floor.

The Rams extended the lead to 39-14 early in the third, before the Mariners used a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 39-21. Farmingdale State responded with five straight points to quickly bring the lead back to 23, 44-21, with 4:57 left in the quarter.

FSC held a 24-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter as they earned the 67-48 road victory.

Sophomore forward AJ Smith (Freeport, N.Y.) led all scorers with 18 points and added nine rebounds, while Harrison finished with 12 points and a game-high four assists for the Rams.

Freshman guard Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) recorded a team-leading 14 points for Merchant Marine.

Farmingdale State next will host Yeshiva (at Old Westbury) on Sunday, December 4th at noon.
