Desvignes Leads Rams in Second Half Rally

Farmingdale State - 65, Old Westbury - 61


Old Westbury, N.Y. - Junior guard Andrea Desvignes (Deer Park, N.Y.) led the Farmingdale State women's basketball team to a 65-61 victory over conference rival Old Westbury tonight, scoring 18 of her 22 points in the second half. With the win, the Rams improved to 14-8, 9-0 in Skyline play, while the Panthers fell to 10-12, 3-6.

Tied at 9-9 early in the first half, Old Westbury ran up a 21-11 advantage with 7 minutes to go. Farmingdale State responded with a 12-3 run to cut the deficit to 24-23 with 2:57 on the clock and would trail Old Westbury 28-25 at the halftime break.

In the second half, the lead did not eclipse five while the Rams eventually took the 37-36 lead on a three-pointer by Desvignes at 13:57. Farmingdale State led the rest of the way and by as many as seven points twice in the second half, but Old Westbury was not backing down and with 49 seconds remaining, trailed by just two points, 58-56.

The Rams held on over the final seconds, sinking 4-of-6 free throws, to secure the conference win and remain undefeated in the Skyline.

Desvignes led for Farmingdale State with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds, along with five steals and three assists. Senior guard Nicole Lanteri (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) totaled 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while junior forward Marlaina Sherman (Miller Place, N.Y.) scored 12 points and eight rebounds. Junior forward Nailah Cherry (Roosevelt, N.Y.) finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Senior guard Jeanette Spillane (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) rounded out the starting five with career and game-highs of 13 rebounds and six steals.

The Rams will now host Skyline opponent Purchase College on Saturday, February 14th at 1:00 p.m.
