John Jay Outlasts Rams in Non-Conference Victory

Farmingdale, N.Y. - John Jay scored 51 points in the second half as they earned an 81-76 non-conference victory over Farmingdale State this evening. The Bloodhounds improved to 8-14, while the Rams now stand at 11-8 on the season.

Trailing 38-33 with 17:53 remaining, Farmingdale State junior guard Christina Merrill (Levittown, N.Y.) hit a 3 followed by a Camille Romero (Queens, N.Y.) layup to tie the game at 38-38. The Rams increased their lead to 47-42, before a 8-0 run put John Jay ahead by three, 50-47.

The Bloodhounds held a 68-61 lead with 4:13 left to play, until three points by Romero and a Jeanette Spillane (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) layup cut the deficit to 68-66. John Jay responded with three straight points at the free-throw line to bring the advantage back to five with 2:18 remaining.

Trailing 76-70 with less than a minute remaining, Merrill forced a steal and hit a 3-pointer to cut the John Jay lead in half.

Farmingdale State could not pull closer than three over the final seconds and fell, 81-76.

Senior guard Nicky Young (Queens, N.Y.) led all scorers with 24 points, while Romero added 22. Merrill tallied 10 points after shooting 3-for-5 from behind the arc for the Rams.

The Bloodhounds were led by junior guard Tyana Hale (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who scored a team-leading 22 points, while senior forward Jamecia Forsythe (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Farmingdale State next will travel to NYU-Poly on Wednesday, February 12th at 7:00 p.m.
