Hunter College – 63, Farmingdale State – 60
Farmingdale, N.Y. – The visiting Hunter College women's basketball team (12-13) took a non-conference victory over Farmingdale State tonight, 63-60. The Hawks trailed late in the second half, but were able to complete the comeback in the final seconds for the victory. The Rams fall to 13-8 with the loss.
The Rams trailed by seven halfway through the first half before a 13-4 run tied the game at 17-17 with 5:53 left to play. Hunter led 28-23 at the break, behind 13 points and six rebounds from sophomore forward Kristen Markoe (Staten Island, N.Y.).
In the second, Farmingdale stole back the lead early, 31-30, with 17:18 remaining and would hold a convincing lead over the next 10 minutes. With 4:34 remaining and the Rams ahead 58-47, the Hawks went on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 58-58 with 1:13 to go.
Freshman guard Shatira Hamlet (Rosedale, N.Y.) made a layup at 0:34 to give Hunter the 60-58 edge. On the Rams next possession, with one second on the shot clock, junior guard Baytania Newman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took an inbounds pass and tied the game at 60-60 with 17 seconds left.
Hamlet streaked down the court on a fast break and once again put the Hawks ahead, 62-60, and was fouled. She completed the 3-point play for a 63-60 score with 10 seconds left. Farmingdale took two 3-pointers but none would fall as the Hawks came away with the win.
Hamlet finished with a game-high 19 points and four assists. Markoe had the games only double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, along with four assists and four steals. Junior guard Erika DeJesus (New York, N.Y.) totaled 10 points and seven rebounds.
For Farmingdale State, junior guard Jeanette Zubizarreta (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored 15 points, while Newman finished with 14 points and senior forward Dominique Cunningham (Amityville, N.Y.) had 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Rams will now host the College of Staten Island on Thursday, February 16th at 5:00 p.m. This will mark Senior Night for the Rams, and the Play4Kay game, our annual breast cancer fundraiser. The Rams are asking fans to wear pink in an effort to raise awareness for a cure for cancer. A $2 donation will be collected at the door, if you wear pink it will be $1. Raffles will be available, a halftime contest and a 50/50 raffle.
