Newman and Cunningham Lead Rams over St. Joe's

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's basketball team improved to 10-7, 9-1 in the Skyline with a 57-44 win over St. Joseph's (10-8, 5-5). Rams junior guard Baytania Newman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with a game-high 19 points, while senior forward Dominique Cunningham (Amityville, N.Y.) scored the games only double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

With three ties in the first half, Farmingdale State pulled ahead with an eight point run at 11:56 and held a 24-18 lead at the break. St. Joe's cut the deficit to one, 25-24, over the first three minutes of the second half, before Farmingdale pushed the lead back up to seven, 31-24, with 15:54 remaining.

A quick layup and three-pointer would get the Golden Eagles close, 31-29, but Newman and senior forward Natasha Smalls (Harlem, N.Y.) combined for the next six points and Farmingdale would lead the rest of the way.

For the Rams, Cunningham also had five steals. Newman also had six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior guard Nikita Green (Roosevelt, N.Y.) finished the night with eight points, seven rebounds and six steals.

St. Joe's was led by junior forward Amanda Bender (East Northport, N.Y.) with 15 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Senior guard Nicole Redding (Smithtown, N.Y.) pulled down 10 boards and scored six points.

Farmingdale State will now host the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, February 4th for a conference doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. The men's game will follow at 3:00 p.m.
