Rams Upset Defending Conference Champs

Farmingdale State – 56, Mount Saint Mary - 45


Farmingdale, N.Y. – The Farmingdale State women's basketball team upset Mount Saint Mary, the defending conference champions, today with a 56-45 victory to improve to 9-7, 8-1 in the Skyline. The Knights fall to 15-3, 7-1 in conference play.

The Knights led 4-3 until the 15-minute mark when the Rams took their first lead of the game, 6-4, on a layup and free throw by senior forward Natasha Smalls (Harlem, N.Y.). Mount Saint Mary went ahead six minutes later after a three-pointer from senior guard Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) for an 11-9 advantage. Farmingdale took back a quick lead, but the Knights would hold the 25-21 edge at the break.

In the second, the Rams scored on their first two possessions to cut the deficit to three points, 28-25 with 18 left to play. Junior guard Jeanette Zubizarreta (Bay Shore, N.Y.) hit her first of two free throws to tie the game at 37-37 with 12:24 on the clock, then hit the second to give Farmingdale the 38-37 advantage. The Rams would lead the rest of the way and take the victory.

Farmingdale had three players in double figures. Senior guard Kayla Koch (Kings Park, N.Y.) scored 13 points, while Zubizaretta and junior forward Baytania Newman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 10 points a piece.

The Knights scoring was led by Mocanu with a game-high 27 points and five steals. Senior guard Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) finished with a game-high seven rebounds along with six points.

The Rams will travel to face St. Joseph's on Wednesday, February 1st at 5:30 p.m.
