
Rams Drop Season Opener in Overtime

New Paltz, N.Y. – The Farmingdale State
women’s basketball team lost its season opener against
William Smith in overtime on Friday in New Paltz, N.Y. William
Smith needed a pair of threes at the end of regulation to force
overtime in the opening round of the New Paltz Tip-Off Classic.
The Rams trailed by two at the half, but held a four point lead
with nine seconds remaining in the game. Sophomore Amy Guthrie
(Florham Park, N.J. / Kent Place School) hit a three for the Herons
to cut the deficit to one and then immediately fouled sending
Farmingdale State to the free throw line. After a Rams miss and an
offensive rebound, junior Kimberly Blakney (Brooklyn, N.Y. /
Benjamin Banneker) made both at the line, giving Farmingdale a
71-68 advantage with four seconds remaining. Senior Latasha Coney
(Lyons, N.Y. / Lyons) hit a running three pointer for William Smith
as time expired, sending the game to overtime.
The Rams held a 77-73 lead with three minutes remaining before the
Herons went on a 7-0 run to seal the victory and go on to defeat
Farmingdale State 80-78.
The Rams were led by Blakney who scored a game high 25 points,
recorded ten rebounds and had four blocks. Freshman Shemique Hooks
(Westbury, N.Y. / Westbury) grabbed eight boards, scored 19 points
and was 3-for-9 from three-point range for Farmingdale. Freshman
Dominique Cunningham (Amityville, N.Y. / Copiague) had a game high
13 rebounds in the defeat.
