Rodriguez, Shorr Lead Rams to Sweep of St. Joseph's-Long Island

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The FSC softball team swept past St. Joseph's-Long Island in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Freshman third baseman Christina Rodriguez (Vineland, N.J.) hit a game-winning two-run double to lead the Rams to a 4-3 game one victory before sophomore pitcher Ava Shorr (North Babylon, N.Y.) tossed a 5-inning no-hitter, the fourth of her career, in a 9-0 game two win.

FSC (17-8, 9-1 Skyline) fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second inning of game one after the Golden Eagles scored an unearned run on an RBI single by second baseman Emily Bazarewski.

In the bottom of the inning, FSC loaded the bases with two outs but St. Joe's Julia Ruocchio forced a groundout to escape the jam.

Farmingdale State evened the score in the bottom of the third inning as junior right fielder Jenna Giliberti (Bellmore, N.Y.) singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior center fielder Priscilla Rivera (Brentwood, N.Y.), stole third, and scored on a single by junior shortstop Angelina Capuano (Sayville, N.Y.). 

Later in the inning, freshman designated player Samantha Stolfi (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) put FSC in front, 3-2, with an RBI double to left.

SJLI quickly responded in the top of the fourth as they scored twice, including one on an error, to take a 3-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, senior third baseman Brooke Walker (Hampton Bays, N.Y.) led off with a single before Shorr reached on a fielder's choice. After freshman Alyssa Baez (Queens, N.Y.) came in to pinch-run, a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third with no one out. Rodriguez followed with her two-run double to put the Rams ahead 4-3.

After registering a leadoff single, Farmingdale State senior pitcher Allie Stanya (Manorville, N.Y.) (W, 8-4, 7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER) got the next three batters out to clinch the 4-3 victory.

Capuano finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI, while Walker had two hits and a run scored. Rodriguez tallied the game-winning double and finished with two hits and two runs batted in. Giliberti, Stolfi and Stanya had one hit apiece.

Farmingdale State opened the scoring in game two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Giliberti singled and scored on an RBI triple by Rivera. Stolfi recorded a sacrifice fly two batters later as FSC took a 2-0 lead.

The Rams added an unearned run in the second and six more in the third to take a commanding 9-0 advantage. Farmingdale State loaded the bases in the third with no outs on singles by Rivera and Stolfi and a walk by Capuano. The Rams scored a pair of runs on wild pitches and used a two-run double by Stolfi to go up 7-0. The final two runs came on an RBI single by sophomore second baseman Alyssa Cowen (Garden City South, N.Y.) and a wild pitch as they took a nine-run lead.

Shorr (W, 9-4, 5 IP, 0 H, 3 SO) did not allow a baserunner in the final two innings as she earned the complete game, no-hitter.

Shorr also finished with a double, two RBI's and two runs scored at the plate. Rivera collected two hits, including a triple, two runs and a stolen base, while Giliberti had two hits and a run scored.

The Rams next head on the road to play Purchase College in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 29th at 11:00 a.m.
