Rams Split with St. Joseph's-LI on Senior Day

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team split a Skyline Conference home doubleheader with St. Joseph's-Long Island this afternoon. The Rams fell, 3-2, in game one but rebounded with a 1-0 victory in the second game.

It was senior day at Farmingdale State and prior to the first pitch, Cathleen Cassese (Levittown, N.Y.), Aleysha Midgett (Brentwood, N.Y.), Jaxie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y.) were each honored.

After SJC-LI (12-10, 8-2) scored a run in the top of the first, FSC (13-13, 11-1) freshman center fielder Priscilla Rivera (Brentwood, N.Y.) answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun over the right field fence to tie the score.

With the game still even at 1-1 in the bottom of the third, sophomore left fielder Lexie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) drew a one-out walk before Rivera registered a double to left field. In the next at-bat, freshman shortstop Jessica Clark (Selden, N.Y.) hit sacrifice fly to score L. Collard and put the Rams ahead, 2-1.

In the top of the fourth, the Golden Eagles used a two-out RBI double by sophomore left fielder Zoe Kelly (Levittown, N.Y.) to score pinch-runner Victoria Iavarone (Miller Place, N.Y.) and tie the game at 2-2.

With two outs and runners on second and third in the top of the sixth, freshman center fielder Jenna DeFina (Massapequa, N.Y.) converted with an RBI single up the middle to put SJC-LI ahead, 3-2. Farmingdale State was held to one hit over the final two innings as the Golden Eagles recorded the 3-2 game one win.

For FSC, Rivera led the way by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, homerun, run scored and RBI.

DeFina had three hits in four at-bats, a run scored and RBI for St. Joe's-LI. Freshman pitcher Catherine Zucker (North Babylon, N.Y.) (5-3) picked up the win after tossing a complete game allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

After neither team scored in the first 3.5 innings of game two, Farmingdale State junior catcher Kimberly Basile (Levittown, N.Y.) reached on a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Mirren O'Mahony (Massapequa, N.Y.) pinch ran for Basile and in the next at-bat, Midgett doubled to right center to score O'Mahony and put the Rams on top, 1-0.

Sophomore Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.) pitched a 1-2-3 fifth and sixth innings before Kassandra Tibbetts (Farmingville, N.Y.) reached on a one-out single through the left side in the top of the seventh. After the single, Smith retired the next two batters to seal the 1-0 victory and doubleheader split.

Clark was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, while Rivera and Midgett each had a double. Smith improved to 4-5 on the year after throwing a complete game shutout allowing five hits and striking out four.

Tibbetts and DeFina each went 2-for-3 at the plate for St. Joe's-LI.
