Purchase, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team earned their 10th straight Skyline Conference victory this afternoon picking up two road wins over Purchase College. FSC won 8-0 in a six-inning run-rule game, before holding off the Panthers in the second, 6-5. The Rams improved to 10-12 overall and 10-0 in the conference, while PC dropped to 7-13, 4-6.
Scoreless in the top of the second of game one, the Rams used an double from senior third baseman Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y.) to score Jessica Lombardo (Levittown, N.Y.) and an RBI groundout from junior pitcher Julia Walpole (Mahopac, N.Y.) to score Julianna Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y.) to take a 2-0 lead.
The Rams added two more runs in the fourth inning to go in front, 4-0. After loading the bases with no one out, Prescia scored on a wild pitch to take a three-run advantage and junior cather Kimberly Basile (Levittown, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single to score Cardenales to put the Rams ahead 4-0.
FSC tallied three runs in the top of the fifth as Lombardo, Cardenales and Basile each recorded RBI's to go up 7-0.
Farmingdale State added an unearned run in the top of the sixth as they went on for the 8-0 run-rule victory.
Prescia was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and a walk, while Cardenales went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI's and two runs scored. Basile tallied two hits and two runs batted in and both sophomore left fielder Lexie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) and freshman shortstop Jessica Clark (Selden, N.Y.) were 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Walpole (W, 2-2) picked up the victory after tossing a complete game shutout and only allowing three baserunners.
Leading 3-0 in the second inning of game two, Farmingdale State freshman right fielder Sabrina Snyder (Brentwood, N.Y.) led off with a single before freshman catcher Jackie Nieman (Seaford, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. The next batter, Collard, reached on an error by the first baseman, which allowed Nieman to reach third and Snyder to score and give the Rams a four-run edge. Freshman center fielder Priscilla Rivera (Brentwood, N.Y.) followed with a sacrifice bunt to score Nieman and put Farmingdale State up, 5-0.
The Rams added a run in the third on a single by Cardenales to score Prescia to take a 6-0 lead.
Still trailing 6-0 in the fifth, Purchase tallied five runs, including a two RBI triple by senior second baseman Victoria Capone-Froio (Yonkers, N.Y.) and a two-run inside-the-park homerun by senior center fielder Kelly Hayes (Staten Island, N.Y.), to close within just one at 6-5.
The Panthers threated with two runners on and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but FSC sophomore Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.) entered the game to pitch and forced a lineout to first base to escape the jam.
In the bottom of the seventh, Smith produced a flyout and two groundouts to earn her first save of the season and secure the Rams 6-5 victory.
Prescia finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, while Snyder recorded two hits and one run. Cardenales and Rivera each had one hit and an RBI and both Collard and Clark scored one run in the win.
For Purchase, senior right fielder Daniella Edelson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) was 3-for-3 with a run scored in defeat.
The Rams next host non-conference opponent John Jay for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9th at 3:30 p.m.
