Kissimmee, Fla. - The Farmingdale State softball team has played six games at The Spring Games down in Florida. FSC began their trip on Saturday, March 16th with 12 scheduled games.
Saturday, March 16th
In their 2019 season opener versus Ursinus on Saturday morning, the Rams lost 6-5. Farmingdale State trailed 3-0 in the fourth and used a solo homerun from freshman shortstop Jessica Clark (Selden, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to two. Still down 3-1 in the top of the sixth, FSC senior third baseman Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y.) hit a two-run single to knot the game at 3-3. The Rams would add a pair of unearned runs in the inning to take a 5-3 advantage. After the Bears loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, sophomore pinch-hitter Delaney Baker (Willow Street, Penn.) would hit a walk-off, three-run double to give Ursinus a 6-5 win.
Bears' sophomore pitcher Gabby Ilyes (York, Penn.) (1-1) earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings in relief.
In their second game of the day, Farmingdale State played Plattsburgh State and fell, 8-5. The Cardinals jumped out to an 8-1 advantage through four innings. FSC tallied a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Kimberly Basile (Levittown, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to six and followed with three more runs in the sixth but would eventually fall, 8-5.
Rams' sophomore left fielder Lexie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) recorded three walks and had one run scored, while freshman first baseman Sabrina Snyder (Brentwood, N.Y.) tallied a hit, one RBI and one run scored in the loss.
On the mound, Farmingdale State sophomore Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.) tallied 2.2 perfect innings in relief.
Sunday, March 17th
FSC dropped a pair of games to Hamilton, 12-4, and Rutgers-Camden, 3-2.
The Continentals used a five-run fifth and a six-run seventh en route to the 12-4 victory. The Rams scoring was highlighted by a pair of RBI doubles from freshman second baseman Julianna Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y.) and Collard.
In the one-run loss to Rutgers-Camden, Farmingdale State was down 2-0 in the second and quickly loaded the bases with just one out. Cardenales came off the bench to pinch-hit and registered a two-run single to tie the game up. Neither team would score until the bottom of the fifth, when the Scarlet Raptors used a single, sacrifice bunt, wild pitch and sacrifice fly to go in front, 3-2. In the top of the seventh, Collard hit a one-out double, but Rutgers-Camden senior Kendra Pfister (Dacula, Ga.) (1-0) forced the next two batters to pop up to end the game.
Basile led the Rams with two hits and one run batted in, while freshman center fielder Priscilla Rivera (Brentwood, N.Y.) was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
Monday, March 18th
Farmingdale State fell to both Albright, 8-5, and Rutgers-Newark, 3-1, on Monday.
FSC was down 3-0 against the Lions until the fourth inning when they tallied five runs. With the bases loaded and no one out, junior first baseman Natalie Rodgers (Stony Brook, N.Y.) earned an RBI walk before an error allowed another run to score. The next batter, Collard, tallied a two-run single to put the Rams ahead, 4-3. Farmingdale State added their fifth run on a single by Clark.
After Albright scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, they scored three more in the sixth to take an 8-5 advantage. FSC recorded a hit in the seventh but were unable to push across another run as the Lions picked up the 8-5 win.
Collard tallied three hits, two RBI's and one walk in the loss.
In their second game of the day against Rutgers-Newark, Farmingdale State only managed three hits off Scarlet Raiders' sophomore pitcher Paige Masiello (West Milford, N.J.) (2-1) as they lost, 3-1. Rams' senior pitcher Jaxie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) (0-2) took the complete game loss after allowing just two earned runs.
Farmingdale State still has six games remaining before they head home on Saturday, March 23rd.
