Rams Take Two in Doubleheader at Purchase

Purchase, N.Y. - After splitting a doubleheader with Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, the Farmingdale State softball team rebounded with a sweep of Purchase on Sunday. The Rams earned a 12-6 victory in game one and followed with a 6-2 win in the second game.

After Purchase (6-14, 6-8) jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first two innings, FSC (19-15, 9-5) closed within one in the top of the third on a two-out 2 RBI single up the middle by senior designated player Marietta Silliman (Hauppauge, N.Y.).

In the top of the fifth, Silliman put the Rams out in front, 4-3, with a 2 RBI single to right field. In the next at-bat, freshman catcher Kimberly Basile (Levittown, N.Y.) singled to center, scoring Christina Rayfield (Commack, N.Y.) and increasing the advantage to 5-3. The final FSC run of the inning came on a one-out sacrifice fly to right field by senior left fielder Allison Dailey (Commack, N.Y.).

The Panthers quickly plated three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to tie the game at 6-6. In the top of the seventh, Farmingdale State scored six runs in six consecutive at-bats with two outs to go ahead, 12-6. Sophomore pitcher Jaxie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) retired Purchase in order in the bottom of the seventh for the game one victory.

Silliman finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a game-high 4 RBI, while sophomore third baseman Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y.) had four hits, one run batted in and two runs scored. Rayfield was 3-for-5 and scored a run in the win.

The Panthers had five players with two hits in the game.

In the second game of the DH, sophomore left fielder Alexa Luna (Martin County, Fla.) led off with an infield single and two batters later, Cardenales hit a 2-run home run to give FSC a 2-0 lead.

Tied 2-2 in the top of the third, the Rams used a one-out Jenna Crawford (Farmingdale, N.Y.) RBI double up the middle to go up by one, 3-2.

Farmingdale State extended the advantage to 4-2 in the sixth inning on an RBI single to left from Dailey. Later in the inning, a Jessica Lombardo (Levittown, N.Y.) RBI single and a bases loaded walk to Cardenales put Farmingdale State on top, 6-2.

Over the final two innings, the Panthers recorded three singles but were unable to score as the Rams capped off the sweep, 6-2.

Rayfield and Luna each had two hits and a run scored for FSC. Freshman pitcher Julia Walpole (Mahopac, N.Y.) improved to 5-4 on the season after a complete game, allowing one earned run on seven hits.

The FSC softball team next will play host to Yeshiva for Senior Day on Friday, April 28th at 10:00 a.m.
