Rams Sweep NYU with Walk-Off Hits

Farmingdale, N.Y. – The Farmingdale State softball won both games today, 1-0 and 7-6, with walk-off hits against NYU. The Rams improved to 16-14 with the wins, while the Violets dropped to 17-13.

In game one, top of the third, the Violets led off with a single through the right side by Sam Sicignano (Pleasantville, N.Y.) and a sacrifice bunt to put a runner on second with one out. Sophomore pitcher Jaxie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) was able to force a groundout and foul out to keep the game scoreless.

Sophomore right fielder Ashley Mains (Los Gatos, Ca.) led off the top of the fourth with a triple to right field, before Collard retired the next three batters to strand Mains on base.

In the fifth, sophomore first baseman Allyson Schmus (Voorhees, N.J.) led off with a single and a groundout moved the runner to second. Collard struck out the next batter and forced a pop out two batters later to get out of the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, freshman center fielder Ginger Sherry (Islip, N.Y.) reached base on an error, moved to second on a sac bunt and to third on a groundout. With runners on second and third and two outs, sophomore pitcher Karissa Zubulake (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) got the final out to keep the game 0-0.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. With one out, sophomore right fielder Alexa Luna (Martin County, Fla.) singled down the left field line, before freshman second baseman Jessica Lombardo (Levittown, N.Y.) knocked a double to left center to score Luna and take the 1-0 walkoff win.

Collard improved to an even 7-7 on the season after throwing the complete game shutout, allowing eight hits while striking out two.

Trailing 1-0 in the third inning of game two, the Rams tied the game on an error and took the lead 2-1 after sophomore center fielder Aleysha Midgett (Huntington, N.Y.) hit a single up the middle.

In the bottom of the fourth, FSC tallied another pair of runs on a two-run double by freshman shortstop Shannon Griffin (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to give Farmingdale State the 4-1 advantage. The Rams added their third run of the inning on an RBI groundout by Luna to go up 5-1.

The Violets were able to cut the lead to 5-3 after a pair of run scoring singles by Sage Scheiwiller (Spokane, Wash.) and Mains in the top of the sixth. Later in the inning, with runners on second and third, first baseman Rachel Fulton (Carlsbad, Ca.) hit a two-RBI triple to left and the game would stand at 5-5.

The game went into extra innings and in the top of the eighth the Violets scored a run with a single up the middle by Schmus to take a 6-5 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, senior Allison Dailey (Commack, N.Y.) pinch ran and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A Marietta Silliman (Hauppauge, N.Y.) triple to center scored Dailey to tie the game, 6-6. With one out, senior Jenna Crawford (Farmingdale, N.Y.) hit the walk-off single to score Silliman and take the 7-6 victory.

Luna pitched the final three innings for Farmingdale State, getting the win to improve to 5-3 this year. 

The Rams next travel to Mount Saint Vincent for a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 22nd.
