Rams Win Game Two; Split DH with NJCU

Farmingdale, N.Y. - After falling 5-2 in game one, the Farmingdale State softball team responded with an 11-3 run-rule victory in the second game of the doubleheader against New Jersey City University this afternoon.

The Rams (14-12) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single down the left field line by sophomore shortstop Christina Rayfield (Commack, N.Y.) which scored Alexa Luna (Martin County, Fla.).

The Gothic Knights (8-12) took a 2-1 advantage in the third inning on a Caralynne Rivera (Brick, N.J.) two-out bases loaded 2 RBI single down the left field line. Senior designated player Brianna Rosario (Roselle, N.J.) followed with an RBI single up the middle to put New Jersey City ahead, 3-1. In the next at-bat, an RBI single to left from sophomore third baseman Hannah Gavin (Bordentown, N.J.) scored Rivera and increased the lead to 4-1.

Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, FSC senior left fielder Allison Dailey (Commack, N.Y.) led off with a double and advanced to third on a Ginger Sherry (Islip, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt. Luna followed with an RBI single to left to cut the Farmingdale State deficit to 5-2.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the Rams had two runners on in the seventh but were unable to score and dropped game one, 5-2.

Dailey was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored, while Luna had two hits, an RBI and scored a run.

New Jersey City was led by Rivera who went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and 2 RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Christina Mezey (Jersey City, N.J.) (5-9) recorded the win after a complete game, allowing two runs on six hits with six strikeouts.

After allowing a run in the top of the first inning of game two, the Rams used a two-run double by sophomore third baseman Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y.) to regain the lead, 2-1. In the next FSC at-bat, senior first baseman Lori Michalowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) hit a two-run home run to left field to increase the advantage to 4-1. The Rams tacked on one more run in the first on a Breanna Susa (Bay Shore, N.Y.) RBI single to right center field.

Leading 6-2 in the bottom of the second, Marietta Silliman (Hauppauge, N.Y.), Susa and Griffin each tallied RBI hits to extend the advantage to 9-2.

The Rams added a pair of runs in the fourth before allowing one in the top of the fifth for the 11-3 run-rule victory.

Michalowski was 1-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and 2 RBI, while Rayfield, Cardenales, Silliman, Susa and Griffin all had two hits in the win. Sophomore pitcher Jaxie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) improved to 6-7 on the year after a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits.

The Rams next will host The College of Staten Island in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, April 17th at 3:30 p.m.
