Farmingdale, N.Y. - In a Skyline softball doubleheader this afternoon, St. Joseph's-LI swept Farmingdale State and improved to 11-7 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the conference.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single up the middle by junior designated player Sandra Foster (East Meadow, N.Y.). Three batters later, a one-out Valerie Scura (Selden, N.Y.) RBI single to left field increased the SJC-LI advantage to 2-0. After an RBI single from junior left fielder Madeline Sganga (East Quogue), a bases loaded walk to Jillian McFadzen (Commack, N.Y.) put the Golden Eagles on top, 4-0. The final run of the inning came on a Kristen Arbiter (Seaford, N.Y.) sacrifice fly to center, which scored Scura.
After a five-run third inning increased the St. Joseph's-LI lead to 10-0, the Golden Eagles went ahead, 12-0, after plating two runs in the fifth. The Rams (9-11, 4-4) scored one in the bottom of the fifth as they fell, 12-1.
FSC freshman second baseman Jessica Lombardo (Levittown, N.Y.) was 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored.
The Golden Eagles were led by Sganga who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, 3 RBI and two stolen bases, while Arbiter had two hits and a game-high five runs batted in. Junior pitcher Lauren Buturla (Hauppauge, N.Y.) earned the win after a complete game, allowing one run on three hits.
In the bottom of the third inning of game two, Farmingdale State led 2-1 and used a Breanna Susa (Bay Shore, N.Y.) RBI single to center to take a two-run advantage.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, freshman second baseman Elise Grau (Medford, N.Y.) hit a 2 RBI single to right field to even the score at 3-3.
Tied 3-3 with two outs in the top of the seventh, a 2-run home run to left by Arbiter gave St. Joe's-LI a 5-3 lead. The Rams plated one run in the bottom half of the inning but fell, 5-4.
Farmingdale State had five hits from five different players in the game two loss.
Arbiter was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, run scored and 3 RBI for the Golden Eagles.
Farmingdale State will play St. Joseph's-Brooklyn tomorrow at noon. The game will be at Farmingdale State with the Rams competing as the road team.
