Rams with Two Big Wins over St. Joe's
Game 1: Farmingdale State - 3, St. Joseph's - 2 (8 innings)
Game 2: Farmingdale State - 5, St. Joseph's - 1
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team improved to 20-4, 8-2 in the Skyline Conference with a doubleheader sweep of St. Joseph's (11-11, 5-5) today in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Rams won game one 3-2 in 8 innings, before pulling away for a 5-1 victory in game two to complete the sweep.
Farmingdale State got on the board in the second inning of the first game with an RBI single to right from sophomore right fielder Jennifer Jarczynski (West Babylon, N.Y.). In the fifth, the Golden Eagles brought in two runs to take the lead, 2-1. But the Rams tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on two hits and one error, as senior shortstop Nicole Farber (Oakdale, N.Y.) scored the tying run after opening the inning with a single to second base.
Farmingdale had a scoring chance in the bottom of the seventh, with bases loaded and two outs, but could not convert after a close call at first base ended the inning. In the eighth, the international tie-breaker rule places a runner at second to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt by St. Joe's left fielder Gina Moscatelli moved the runner over to third, but a line out to short and a groundout to second would give the Rams another chance for the win.
Sophomore third baseman Kristen Flint (Brentwood, N.Y.) started on second base for Farmingdale. Jarcynski sacrifice bunted her over to third, and then a sacrifice fly RBI by sophomore catcher Lauren Nelson (Levittown, N.Y.) would score Flint for the game-winning run and a 3-2 Rams victory.
Junior pitcher Hope Zino (Bay Shore, N.Y.) struck out 10 in the outing, allowing no earned runs and improving her record this season to 12-1.
In game two, Farmingdale scored two in the second inning on three hits. Flint opened the inning with a triple to right, while Jarczynski brought her home with a hit up the middle. Junior center fielder Kaitlin Keenan (West Islip, N.Y.) singled to short bringing home Jarczynski for the 2-0 lead.
In the third, Farber led off with a single to third and would come around on a sacrifice fly by Jarczynski for the 3-0 Rams advantage. St. Joe's got a run back in the fourth, but Farmingdale pulled away in the fifth on a two-run homerun from junior second baseman Madison Snyder (Medford, N.Y.) for a 5-1 lead and the eventual win.
Senior pitcher Heather Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y.) got her seventh win of the season (7-2) as she struck out six batters, while allowing seven hits and just one walk.
The Rams will now face Mount Saint Mary College on Friday, April 15th at 5:00 p.m. in a Skyline doubleheader at the Mt. Airy Sports Complex in New Windsor, N.Y.
