- Tiernan's 3.74 GPA Garners All-Academic Distinction - View Full Release
New Orleans, La. – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as well as the men who earned 2011 Division III All-Academic Cross Country status. Ben Sathre of the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota) was named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2011 cross country season.
Farmingdale State senior Sean Tiernan (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) was named All-Academic as he holds a cumulative 3.74 GPA and finished 52nd out of 272 runners in the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regionals held at St. Lawrence University's Ronald C. Hoffman Cross Country Course on November 12th. Tiernan also defended his Skyline Invidual Title this season, cruising to his 1st place finish, 40 seconds ahead of the 2nd place runner.
A total of 141 student-athletes represent the 80 institutions that compose the group. As a team, Haverford claimed the most on the All-Academic list with five. Five other squads: Calvin, Wabash, St. Olaf, Centre, and Williams had four on the list. The NESCAC notched 13 honors to lead all conferences around the country. The SCAC and UAA followed with 12 and 11, respectively.
Ten of the top 20 finishers at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships earned All-Academic status, including top-ten finishers Sathre, Timothy Nelson (UW-Stout), Kevin McCarthy (Wabash), and Michael Burnstein (Washington (Mo.)). In addition, four of eight NCAA Regional Champions from the 2011 season earned All-Academic honors.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in the top 35 percent at the NCAA Regional Championships.
