Freshman Andre Brown (Jamaica, NY/Waterford, West Indies) won the Division III NCAA Championship in the Long Jump competition with a leap of 23 feet 10 inches - 7.26 meters. Brown, who qualified for the NCAA’s with a leap of 22’ 11 ¾” (7.00m), was the first Farmingdale State student-athlete in history to qualify for the Division III NCAA’s and now becomes the first student-athlete at Farmingdale to win a Division III National Championship.

In the preliminary round in the midst of 11 other long jumpers, Andre jumped 6.81 meters (22’ 4 ¼”) on his first attempt. He fouled on the 2nd jump and then jumped 6.95 meters (22’ 9 ¾”) on his third attempt. The two jumps put him in fifth place with nine jumpers going into the finals.

In the Long Jump finals, Andre’s first attempt measured 7.09 meters (23’ 3 ¼”), moving him into second place. His second jump, which would stand as the championship jump, measured at 7.26 meters (23’ 10”), followed by a third jump of 7.10 meters (23’ 3 ½”).

Brown edged out Tufts University sophomore Fred Jones, who saved his best for last at 7.24 meters (23’ 9”) in his final jump of the day.
