Valiants Score Pair of Second Half Goals to Defeat Rams

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's soccer team played host to Manhattanville for a Skyline Conference game this afternoon and fell, 2-0. The Rams dropped to 7-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the Skyline, while the Valiants remain undefeated in conference play and improved to 7-4-2, 6-0-1.

Farmingdale State controlled play in the first half, attempting 10 shots, including five on goal, while holding Manhattanville to just one shot on net. 

FSC's best chance came off a corner kick in the 27th minute. Senior midfielder Carlos Rivera (Huntington, N.Y.) sent the ball for freshman forward Roberto Alfaro (Huntington Station, N.Y.), who was stopped on a diving save from Valiants' sophomore goalkeeper Luis Granados (Pasadena, Calif.).

Only 3:35 into the second half, Manhattanville junior defender Gabriel Jefferies (Tunbridge Wells, U.K.) set up sophomore midfielder Jackson Ayres (Tampa, Fla.) for a goal to put the Valiants on top, 1-0.

In the 55th minute, Alfaro gathered a loose ball and fired a shot but Granados made another diving stop to maintain the 1-0 advantage.

With 17:30 on the clock, Rivera had a shot blocked before Farmingdale State senior midfielder Alex Castano (Huntington, N.Y.) ripped a shot that was saved. 

Rivera's final scoring chance came with 12:03 remaining when he dribbled past two defenders but had the ball kicked away by Granados.

With 8:58 left to play, an FSC foul in the box set up a penalty kick goal for Manhattanville junior midfielder Michael Mezzina (Pompton Lakes, N.J.).

Farmingdale State was held without a shot over the final seven minutes as the Valiants earned the 2-0 victory.

Rams' sophomore goalkeeper Justin Silva (Bellrose, N.Y.) (L, 6-3-1) made one stop, while Granados (W, 7-2-1) finished with seven saves in the shutout. 

The Rams next will travel to play Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, October 16th at 12:00 p.m.
