New Paltz, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's soccer team traveled to non-conference opponent SUNY New Paltz on Saturday afternoon and lost, 1-0. The Rams dropped to 1-2 on the season, while the Hawks have won three straight and improved to 4-1.

In a scoreless first half, New Paltz held a 5-2 shot advantage and took the only five corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.

Just 2:41 into the second half, sophomore midfielder Papis Konate (Bronx, N.Y.) set up junior midfielder Philip Varner (Berlin, N.J.) for his first goal of the season to give the Hawks the 1-0 advantage.

Following the score, FSC quickly brought the ball up the field and attempted a shot, but it soared wide of the net as the game remained, 1-0.

Neither team recorded a shot until the 81st minute when New Paltz freshman forward Gino Mazzella (Highland, N.Y.) made an attempt that was saved by Farmingdale State sophomore goalkeeper Justin Silva (Bellrose, N.Y.).

On the ensuing corner kick, Varner was able to get off a shot, but Silva made another save to keep the game 1-0.

The Hawks held the Rams without a shot over the final 8:23 as they went on for the 1-0 victory.

Silva totaled four saves on the day, while graduate student Marc DePasquale (Huntington Station, N.Y.) made one stop in net for the shutout.

Farmingdale State next plays host to Brooklyn College for a non-conference game on Monday, September 13th at 4:00 p.m.
