Schmidt's Game-Winner in Double OT Sends Rams Past Purchase

Purchase, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Chris Schmidt (Massapequa, N.Y.) sent home the game-winner in double overtime to lead the Farmingdale State men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Purchase this afternoon. FSC improved to 9-9 overall and 6-4 in the Skyline Conference with today's win.

Purchase (7-9-1, 5-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute after sophomore forward Anthony Guzzone (Shoreham, N.Y.) scored from eight feet out on a cross in front by junior midfielder Eslam Ellisy (Nyack, N.Y.). The Rams out shot the Panthers 8-6 in the first half but were unable to score and went into the break trailing, 1-0.

Early in the second half, Farmingdale State couldn't capitalize on a scoring opportunity as they took three shots, one of which was saved and another hit the post, in a 10 second span.

With 2:15 remaining in regulation, Schmidt tied the game at 1-1 after netting the cross by junior forward Robert Anastasio (Lynbrook, N.Y.). Farmingdale State attempted two shots in the final minute but did not score as the game headed to overtime.

After a scoreless first OT, Schmidt recorded the game-winning goal with 52 seconds on the clock as the Rams earned the 2-1 road victory.

FSC freshman goalkeeper Justin Silva (Bellrose, N.Y.) had five saves, while freshman Mario Olmedo (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) stopped eight shots for the Panthers.

Farmingdale State next will close out the regular season when they host Manhattanville on Tuesday, October 29th at 4:00 p.m.
