Varner and Maltes Each Score Twice as New Paltz Blanks Rams

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Freshman midfielder Philip Varner (Berlin, N.J.) and sophomore forward James Maltes (Washingtonville, N.Y.) each scored twice this afternoon as New Paltz earned a 4-0 non-conference victory over Farmingdale State. The FSC men's soccer team dropped to 3-5 on the year, while the Hawks now stand at 5-2.

Only 2:01 into the game, Maltes scored off a cross in front by senior defender Luke Dole (Bethlehem, N.Y.) to put New Paltz out in front, 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Varner tallied a goal as both junior midfielder Kevin Doorley (Pearl River, N.Y.) and sophomore defender Tommy Jelstrom (Loudonville, N.Y.) recorded assists.

In the 15th minute of action, Maltes notched his second score of the game to put the Hawks up by three. New Paltz went into the break on top 3-0 and out shot the Rams 13-5.

Varner's second goal and New Paltz's final of the game came in the 53rd minute off the feed in front of the net by Doorley. Farmingdale State was held to five shots in the second half but were unable to score as they dropped the non-conference matchup, 4-0.

FSC next will open Skyline Conference play versus Yeshiva at Votee Park (Football Field) on Tuesday, September 24th at 12:30 p.m.
