Farmingdale, N.Y. - In their first game of the 2016 season, the Farmingdale State men's soccer team fell, 1-0, to non-conference opponent the College of Staten Island in double overtime.
With 31:37 remaining in the second half, Staten Island freshman defender Xavier Castro (Ecuador) nearly put the Dolphins ahead as hit shot from in front of the goal hit the crossbar. The Rams were unable to connect on back-to-back scoring opportunities in the 84th minute when a shot by Alex Gimadiev (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and John Kender's (Farmingdale, N.Y.) header off the rebound were both saved. Farmingdale State was out shot 2-1 over the final five minutes of regulation but neither team was able to break the tie.
After a scoreless first overtime, sophomore midfielder Ali Fares (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted the game-winner only 3:14 into the second OT, leading the Dolphins to the 1-0 victory.
Farmingdale State junior goalkeeper Jeff Valencia (Levittown, N.Y.) stopped eight shots, while freshman Jeff Foeldes (South Brunswick, N.Y.) recorded four saves for Staten Island.
The Rams next will face Medgar Evers at Aviator Field in a non-conference game on Saturday, September 3rd at 2:00 p.m
