Patchogue, N.Y. - In the Skyline Conference Men's Soccer Semifinals, the Rams used a victory in penalty kicks to clinch a berth in the Skyline Finals on Saturday. Farmingdale State outscored the Golden Eagles 4-1 in the penalty kicks to earn the win.
The Golden Eagles (9-10-2) struck first in the 36th minute as junior midfielder Justin Heredia (Patchogue, N.Y.) scored off the pass from Dan Cheeseman (Center Moriches, N.Y.).
With 1:03 remaining in the first half, an own goal by St. Joe's tied the game at 1-1 heading into the halftime break.
Only 7:49 into the second half, Farmingdale State (10-8-2) took a 2-1 lead on a J.T. Famularo (Levittown, N.Y.) score after being set up by Richard Mastrangelo III's (Dix Hills, N.Y.) pass.
The Golden Eagles tied the game at 2-2 with 7:04 left on the clock on an unassisted goal by freshman forward Michael Flynn (Speonk, N.Y.). Neither team scored the remainder of regulation as the game headed to overtime.
In the first overtime, the Rams held St. Joe's scoreless with three saves by junior goalkeeper Kevin Gordillo (Farmingdale, N.Y.). In double OT, Farmingdale State out shot the Golden Eagles 2-1 but were unable to score forcing penalty kicks.
The Rams converted all four penalty kicks by Victor Romero (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Anthony Leonick (Levittown, N.Y.), Famularo and Sebastian Ramirez (Bayside, N.Y.) to advance to the Skyline Conference Finals.
Gordillo tied his career-high of nine saves in the victory.
Farmingdale State advances to face #1 Sage on Saturday at noon with the winner of that game receiving the conference's automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament.
