Sarmiento Scores Three as Rams Defeat NYU-Poly

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's soccer team defeated NYU-Poly, 6-1, in a Skyline Conference match this afternoon in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Rams improved to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in Skyline play, while the Fighting Blue Jays dropped to 0-10-1, 0-6.

The Fighting Blue Jays struck first with 21:48 remaining in the first half as freshman midfielder Carlos Fidalgo (Caracas, Venezuela) was set up in front with a short pass from junior forward Andres Torres (Weston, Fla.). The Rams tied the game at 1-1 in the 42nd minute on a score by sophomore midfielder Diego Sarmiento (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) as senior midfielder Matt Kirby (West Islip, N.Y.) recorded the assist. The pair connected for another goal less than three minutes later to put Farmingdale State ahead, 2-1, at the halftime break.

Sarmiento tallied his third goal of the game only 28 seconds after the break to give the Rams a 3-1 advantage. The Rams extended their lead to 4-1 on an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Victor Romero (Bay Shore, N.Y.) in the 57th minute. Farmingdale State added goals by sophomore midfielder Michael Vultaggio (Massapequa, N.Y.) and senior forward John Popovic (Baldwin, N.Y.) in the victory.

Farmingdale State next will host Mount Saint Mary in a conference match on Friday, October 18th at 4:00 p.m.
