
2009 Men's Soccer Recap
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State
men's soccer team finished the season with a 10-9-1 overall record,
including 6-2 in the Skyline Conference. The Rams earned the #2
seed for the conference playoffs, falling at home to Old Westbury,
3-2, in the semifinal round.
Farmingdale earned their second consecutive bid to the ECAC Metro Region Championship this season. They traveled to Old Westbury, defeating the Panthers, 2-1, in the quarterfinals, before knocking off top-seeded Rutgers-Newark in the semifinal round. The Rams were ECAC Championship runner-ups after a 2-1 loss to #2 Drew University.
Four players were named to the All-Skyline Conference Team this
season. Junior defender Mat Arthurs (Islip Terrace, N.Y.), senior
midfielder Frank Volante (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and junior forward
Ryan Paul (Sayville, N.Y.) received First Team Honors, while senior
goalkeeper Patrick Gubbins (East Patchogue, N.Y.) was named Second
Team. Arthurs was in charge of a defense that had a Skyline best
seven shutouts, while Volante started every game, scoring three
goals and recording one assist. He currently holds the
school-record with 14 career assists. Paul was second in the
Conference with 14 goals scored, 12th in the nation with a 0.88
goal per game average and 41st in the country with a 1.75 point per
game average. Gubbins had 98 saves in 17 games played this season,
holding a .784 save percentage. Gubbins leaves Farmingdale as the
all-time leader in wins (35) and shutouts (20).
Freshman midfielder Joe Brantmeyer (Center Moriches, N.Y.) was second on the team with nine goals and 21 points this year. He scored all three goals in the ECAC semifinal win over Rutgers-Newark. Senior midfielder Marcos Cipra (Long Beach, N.Y.) scored two goals and had two assists in his final season at Farmingdale State.
The Rams will be returning 24 of their 27 players for the 2010 season.
