Newark, N.J. – The Farmingdale State men's soccer team fell to Rutgers-Newark, 4-0, on Wednesday night in a non-conference game in Newark, N.J. The game was scoreless until the 64th minute of play, as the Scarlet Raiders erupted for four goals over a 22 minute span to closeout the game.

Junior midfielder Estiven Benitezand and sophomore forward Richie Villamar teamed up for a pair of goals which ignited the outburst. After a scoreless first period, Villamar one-timed a corner kick by Benitez from the left side in the 65th minute. Less than six minutes later, Villamar fed Benitez from the left corner on a 35-yard rope inside the far post.

Senior transfer Tyler Chiara put away a pass from freshman forward Chris DeFalco in the 79th minute, before freshman forward Jervis Witherspoon rebounded his own shot from inside the box and pushed a shot into the open left side of the net with just 3:01 remaining.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Zielyk needed just one save in each half to post the shutout victory as the Scarlet Raiders (1-1-2) out-shot the Rams (1-2-0), 26-3.

Senior goalkeeper Patrick Gubbins (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) kept the Rams in the contest, making 11 saves. He stopped golden opportunities off the foot of junior Innocent Buule twice during a two-and-a-half minute span midway through the second half.

The Raiders put 16 shots on goal and forged a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Farmingdale State will now face Brooklyn College on Saturday, September 12th at 1:00 p.m.
