Caccavale Can't Save Rams in Season Opener

NEW PALTZ, NY � The Farmingdale State men's soccer team fell to SUNY New Paltz this afternoon in the season opener in New Paltz, NY. The Hawks garnered their first win of the season by defeating the Rams 3-1.

New Paltz dominated play by outshooting Farmingdale in the first half 24-11 and held a 12-0 corner kick advantage, but Rams freshman goalkeeper Joseph Caccavale (West Islip, NY/West Islip) played strong in net, making nine saves to keep the game scoreless at the half.

Senior Daniel Cocciardi (Stormville, NY/John Jay) opened the scoring in the second half for New Paltz at 61:47 on a one-touch shot. Three minutes later, 64:36, Joe Fabian (Selden, NY/Newfield) netted his second of the year for the Hawks, which proved to be the game winner.

Sophomore Chris Hotzak (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) found the back of the net to put the Hawks up 3-0 at 81:20 after a scramble with a defensemen and the Rams goalkeeper.

Senior midfielder Carlos Proano (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) scored the loan goal for Farmingdale State at 82:59.

Senior goalkeeper Jeff Dudley (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) played the entire match and recorded four saves for the win, while Caccavale finished with 14 saves in defeat.

The Rams now travel to Newark, NJ this weekend, alongside the women's soccer team, for the Rutgers-Newark Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
