Old Westbury Earns Pair of Comeback Wins Over FSC

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. | The Farmingdale State baseball team dropped a pair of games to SUNY Old Westbury on Tuesday afternoon. FSC lost the first game by a 9-6 final, before OW used an eighth-inning comeback to earn a 5-4 win in game two. The Rams fell to 16-15 overall and 8-8 in the Skyline, while the Panthers improved to 16-16, 9-7.

The Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of two-out RBI singles from junior designated hitter Daniel Deutsch (Northport, N.Y.) and junior left fielder Daniel Molina (East Meadow, N.Y.) in the first two innings.

Old Westbury would tie the score in the bottom of the third with a pair of unearned runs.

Farmingdale State responded with four runs in the top of the fourth, including a three-run home run to left by sophomore second baseman Chris McGuggart (Bethpage, N.Y.), to take a 6-2 advantage.

The Panthers trailed 6-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning and scored five straight runs, capped off by a three-run home run, to take a 9-6 lead.

FSC was held off the board in the seventh as they fell, 9-6.

McGuggart was 2-for-3 with a walk, home run, three RBI's and two runs scored, while Molina registered two hits and two runs batted in. Junior first baseman Jordan Lambert (Plainview, N.Y.) and senior catcher Brad Sakellarides (East Moriches, N.Y.) had two hits apiece in the loss.

Game two was tied 1-1 heading into the eighth and after McGuggart singled and senior right fielder Bobby Pollock (Manorville, N.Y.) walked, Lambert roped a two-run triple to put the Rams ahead 3-1.

Sakellarides followed with an RBI single to give Farmingdale State a three-run advantage.

Old Westbury responded again with four runs in the bottom of the inning on a three-run home run and a double as they jumped in front, 5-4.

The Rams got a runner to second base with just one out in the ninth, but Panthers Kyle Gaertner retired the final two batters to clinch the 5-4 win.

FSC freshman shortstop Giovanni Cassino (Miller Place, N.Y.) produced two hits and an RBI, while Lambert had the triple and two runs batted in. Sakellarides recorded a hit, a walk and an RBI and Pollock drew three walks and scored a run.

Molina threw 6.2 innings on the mound, giving up just one earned run, but did not earn a decision.

The FSC baseball team will next travel to play Maritime in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday, May 6th at noon.
