Game 2: Farmingdale State - 6, Old Westbury - 3 (7-Inning Game)

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team hosted Old Westbury for a Skyline Conference doubleheader this afternoon and fell in game one, 3-1, before earning a victory in the second game, 6-3. The Rams now stand at 10-7 overall and 9-5 in conference play.

Over the first three innings of game one, FSC's Joe Marino (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) and Panthers' Tim Woodford (Smithtown, N.Y.) tallied five and three strikeouts, respectively, as both teams were held scoreless.

Old Westbury pushed across a run in the fourth as junior right fielder Drew Robertson (Roosevelt, N.Y.) drove in senior designated hitter Brandon Wilson (Stony Brook, N.Y.) on a sacrifice fly.

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. With Rams' freshman second baseman Giancarlo Giacometti (Wantagh, N.Y.) on first base with two outs, senior left fielder Vincent Napolitano (Bellmore, N.Y.) hit a single to left center to put runners on first and second. The next batter was freshman first baseman Jordan Lambert (Plainview, N.Y.) and he hit an RBI single up the middle to score Giacometti and tie the game at 1-1.

The Panthers had a runner on third base with two out in the top of the seventh, but sophomore pitcher Thomas Messina (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) forced a groundout to keep the game knotted at 1-1.

Woodford set the Rams down in order in the bottom of the seventh as the game headed to extra-innings.

In the eighth, OW junior shortstop Mike Manetta (Farmingdale, N.Y.) hit a solo homerun over the right field fence to go in front, 2-1. Later in the inning, junior third baseman Shaun Kaminski (Babylon, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to give the Panthers a 3-1 advantage.

The Rams were set down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning as Woodford (W, 2-0) picked up the complete game victory.

Freshman designated hitter Peter Minneci (Shoreham, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a double, while Lambert had one hit, an RBI and a walk.

Marino did not receive a decision but tossed six innings with six strikeouts in the loss.

In the bottom of the second of game two, Lambert led off with a single, stole second and scored on back-to-back wild pitches to put FSC on top, 1-0. After Napolitano walked, he quickly stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI groundout by Minneci. With two out and no one on, freshman left fielder Chris Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y.) singled and later scored on an RBI double from freshman second baseman Jack Altieri (West Islip, N.Y.) as the Rams took a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Manetta responded with his second solo homerun of the day to cut their deficit to 3-1.

FSC junior pitcher Stephen Clancy (Mineola, N.Y.) held Old Westbury off the board until the top of the sixth when a two-out RBI double by junior second baseman Nic Labiento (Lynbrook, N.Y.) allowed the Panthers to close within one, 3-2. OW tied the game at 3-3 in the next at-bat on an error by the Rams.

Farmingdale State sophomore right fielder Bobby Pollock (Manorville, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple and later scored on a suicide squeeze to give the Rams a 4-3 advantage. With two out and two on, freshman left fielder Chris Driscoll (Seaford, N.Y.) hit a two-run single to give the Rams a 6-3 lead.

In the top of the seventh, freshman pitcher Michael Schock (Plainedge, N.Y.) (W, 1-0, 1.1 IP) forced a ground out, fly out and a pop out as FSC went on for the 6-3 win.

Driscoll was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored, while Altieri went 2-for-2 with a run batted in and a double. Napolitano recorded two walks and scored two runs and Pollock finished with a triple and one run scored.

The Rams will finish up their four-game series with Old Westbury tomorrow, Sunday April 25th at 2:30 p.m.
