Farmingdale, N.Y. - The FSC baseball team hosted Mount Saint Mary College for a Skyline doubleheader this afternoon and won both games. Farmingdale State earned a 6-1 victory in the first game, before defeating the Knights 2-0 in the second. With the wins, the Rams have extended their season-high winning streak to 11 games.
Prior to today's games, the 2009 Farmingdale State baseball team that reached the College World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin was honored for their 10-year anniversary. The Rams reached the World Series after capturing the New York Regional which was held at Farmingdale State College. Team captain and four-year player John Anarumo threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Farmingdale State (18-5, 7-1 Skyline) opened the scoring in the fourth inning of game one after junior right fielder Vincent Rice (North Massapequa, N.Y.) led off with a double and later scored on a two-run homerun from junior left fielder Vincent Napolitano (Bellmore, N.Y.).
After the Knights (8-11, 2-6 Skyline) were set down 1-2-3 in top of the fifth, junior pitcher Steven Burke (North Babylon, N.Y.) and sophomore catcher Michael Amandola (North Babylon, N.Y.) each registered RBI singles in the bottom of the inning to put the Rams ahead 4-0.
In the top of the seventh, Mount Saint Mary recorded their first run of the game on a hit-by-pitch to cut their deficit to three.
Leading 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Rams' junior center fielder Jimmy Mattera (West Islip, N.Y.) and senior third baseman Jason Conti (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) each drew walks before junior first baseman Morgan McCarthy (Oceanside, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to right field to put Farmingdale State ahead 5-1. The Rams would add their sixth and final run of the game on a double steal during the next at-bat. McCarthy stole second base, while Conti sprinted home.
The Knights would only manage one hit the rest of the way as Farmingdale State earned the 6-1 game one victory.
Rice tallied two hits, a double and a run scored, while Napolitano was 1-for-4 with his two-run homerun. Mattera tallied a triple, a walk and one run and both Amandola and McCarthy had one hit and one run batted in.
Burke (W, 2-0), who went 2-for-4 with an RBI, only gave up four hits in 7.1 innings pitched to earn the victory.
In the third inning of the second game, McCarthy reached second base on an error and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop Shawn Blasberg (Sound Beach, N.Y.). After junior left fielder Nick Attardi (Smithtown, N.Y.) drew a walk, Conti tallied an RBI single to put the Rams up 1-0. With the bases loaded two batters later, Amandola registered a sacrifice fly to score Attardi and give Farmingdale State a two-run advantage.
Over the final four innings, each team would combine for just one hit as the Rams went on for the 2-0 win.
Rice went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks, while Conti was 1-for-3 with one run batted in.
Junior Nicholas Rooney (Ridge, N.Y.) (W, 2-0) picked up the win after tossing his first career complete game shutout. Rooney only allowed three baserunners in the game.
The Rams next host St. Joseph's-Brooklyn for a Skyline Conference doubleheader tomorrow, Sunday, April 7th at noon.
