Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team hosted Skyline Conference opponent Yeshiva University for a doubleheader this afternoon and won both games. FSC captured the first game 17-3 and followed with a 10-3 victory in the second to improve to 15-9 overall and 7-3 in conference play. Senior center fielder/pitcher Brandon Ernest (Owings, Md.), who reached base in all 10 plate appearances this afternoon, set the school record with six stolen bases in game two.
In game one, the Rams scored a run in the first inning on an RBI double by sophomore right fielder Devin Caybasi (St. James, N.Y.) and followed with a run in the second on an Ernest RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.
Yeshiva (3-12, 0-10) responded in the fourth inning by scoring three runs on four hits, including a two-run triple by junior left fielder Aryeh Salovey (San Diego, Calif.).
In the bottom of the fourth, 13 straight Farmingdale State batters reached base on 12 hits and a walk as the Rams plated 10 runs in the inning to go in front, 12-3. FSC added three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth en route to the 17-3 run-rule victory.
Sophomore pitcher Vincent Rice (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) started and tossed three shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out seven. Senior Thomas Pallatto (Oceanside, N.Y.) (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after pitching one inning in relief.
For Farmingdale State, junior left fielder Joseph Roche (Westbury, N.Y.) was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored, 3 RBI and two stolen bases, while Ernest had three hits, a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Junior shortstop Shawn Blasberg (Sound Beach, N.Y.) was 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored, an RBI and a pair of stolen bases and sophomore second baseman Tyler Schrimpf (Miller Place, N.Y.) was 2-for-5 with a run scored and game-high 4 RBI.
Salovey was 1-for-3 with a triple and two runs batted in for Yeshiva.
In game two, Ernest led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle and stole second. After a Blasberg walk and double steal, an FSC sacrifice fly and Yeshiva throwing error scored both Ernest and Blasberg as the Rams took a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Farmingdale State went ahead 3-0 on a Blasberg RBI single to shortstop which scored Ernest.
Yeshiva answered in the fourth with back-to-back RBI triples from sophomore center fielder David Hanelin (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore second baseman Zachary Baly (Los Angeles, Calif.) to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Rams regained a two-run advantage in the bottom of the fourth after senior catcher Kenneth Johntry (Yaphank, N.Y.) converted a squeeze bunt to score senior second baseman Nicholas Soriano (Lindenhurst, N.Y.).
After the Maccabees plated a run in the top of the fifth, Farmingdale State scored three in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch and RBI singles from Soriano and senior first baseman Christopher Reilly (Levittown, N.Y.) to extend the lead to 7-3. The Rams added three in the sixth and held the Maccabees scoreless in the final inning as they earned the 10-3 game two victory.
Soriano was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI, while six other players had one hit. Ernest (1-0) recorded the win after throwing one hitless inning in relief.
The Rams finished with 12 stolen bases which is the second most all-time and one shy of the single game school record set on March 23, 2013 against Mount Saint Vincent.
FSC next will host St. Joseph's-Long Island in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 15th at noon.
