Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team faced Skyline opponent St. Joseph's-Brooklyn this afternoon for a doubleheader on Senior Day and won the first game 8-2 before falling in the second, 4-3.
The Rams are now 14-11 on the season and 9-3 in conference play, while the Bears stand at 9-10, 8-4.
Senior's Joe Guercio (Kings Park, N.Y.), Dalton McCarthy (Manorville, N.Y.), Ryan O'Connor (Babylon, N.Y.), and Matt Seelinger (Westbury, N.Y.) were all honored prior to today's games.
After the Rams scored a pair of unearned runs in the second and third innings to go up 2-0, a passed ball followed by a sacrifice fly from sophomore first baseman John Condon (Oceanside, N.Y.) allowed St. Joe's to cut the deficit in half, 2-1, in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom half of the inning, junior second baseman Domenic Palumbo (Plainview, N.Y.) led off with a single to center field, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a fly out to right field. In the next at-bat, he scored on a wild pitch to regain a two-run lead for FSC, 3-1.
After the Bears notched another unearned run in the top of the fifth, McCarthy hit a solo home run to right center to give the Rams a 4-2 advantage.
McCarthy drove in FSC's fifth run of the contest in the seventh with an RBI groundout which scored freshman right fielder Nick Attardi (Smithtown, N.Y.).
In the bottom of the eighth inning with two on and two out, sophomore Joseph Roche (Westbury, N.Y.) pinch-hit for Attardi and hit a two-run triple over the right fielders head to give Farmingdale State their largest lead of the game, 7-2. The next batter, freshman left fielder Vincent Rice (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), drove in Roche on a single to right center to increase the advantage to 8-2.
Guercio pitched a clean ninth inning as the Rams defeated the Bears 8-2 in the first game.
Seelinger earned the game one victory as he tossed 7.1 innings, allowing no earned runs with six strikeouts.
McCarthy ended the game with a hit, 2 RBI and a run scored, while Rice went 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs batted in.
St. Joseph's-Brooklyn was led by senior catcher Nicholas LoPrinzi (Howard Beach, N.Y.) who went 1-for-2 with two walks.
The Bears got on the board first in the second inning of game two after right fielder Anthony Camerada (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a leadoff double and came around to score on an error to give St. Joe's the 1-0 advantage.
In the top of the fourth inning, Condon led off with a double to right center and was driven in on an RBI groundout, two batters later, as the Bears took a 2-0 lead.
With two outs and runners on second and third in the bottom of the inning, FSC junior shortstop Nicholas Soriano (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) hit a 2 RBI single to right field to tie the game at 2-2.
After an error and a sacrifice fly by Condon allowed SJC-BK to re-take a one-run lead in the top of the fifth, the Rams quickly answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Junior right fielder Brandon Ernest (Owings, MD) led off with a double to left, freshman catcher Anthony Sirianni (Sayville, N.Y.) sacrifice bunted him to third and freshman center fielder Cam Alfano (Yaphank, N.Y.) singled to right field to drive Ernest in and tie the game once again, 3-3.
The Bears loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with only one out, FSC sophomore Ryan Mallon (Deer Park, N.Y.) was able to retire the next two batters, but not before throwing a wild pitch which allowed St. Joe's to score the eventual game-winning run.
Alfano was 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk and an RBI for the Rams.
Bears junior pitcher Thomas Pallatto (Oceanside, N.Y.) earned his first win of the season after throwing a complete game, only allowing five hits in his seven innings of work.
Farmingdale State next travels to face non-conference opponent TCNJ on Tuesday, April 11th at 3:30 p.m.
