Gaffney's Walk-Off Double Secures Panther Sweep

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Freshman pinch hitter Ryan Gaffney (Riverhead, N.Y.) knocked a two-out walk-off double to centerfield in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Farmingdale State a 1-0 game two victory over Old Westbury. The Rams also took game one, 2-1, and improved to 13-12, 8-2 in the Skyline with the doubleheader sweep.

In game one, Old Westbury (19-12, 7-3)  led off with a Jesse Russo (Westbury, N.Y.) walk and he advanced to third on a single through the left side by Joey Walsh (Bethpage, N.Y.). In OW's next at-bat, junior shortstop Tommy Ziegen (Glen Cove, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Russo and putting the Panthers ahead, 1-0.

In the bottom of the third, the Rams tied the game at 1-1 on a two out RBI single to left field by sophomore left fielder Brandon Ernest (Owings, Md.).

FSC took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on Dalton McCarthy's (Manorville, N.Y.) RBI single to left which sent Ernest around to score.

Junior pitcher Matt Seelinger (Westbury, N.Y.) held Old Westbury scoreless the remainder of the way as Farmingdale State earned a 2-1 victory in game one. Seelinger (3-1) tossed a complete game, allowing one run on six hits with nine strikeouts.

Ernest was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, an RBI and one stolen base.

The Panthers were led by Walsh and sophomore first baseman Dean Sheridan (Huntington, N.Y.) who each had two hits. Junior pitcher Trey Pizzutello (Stamford, Conn.) recorded the loss after giving up two runs on five hits in eight innings of work.

Game two was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. Senior pitcher Kevin Martinez (Glen Cove, N.Y.) pitched a no-decision in 4.2 innings of work with five strikeouts and three hits allowed. Sophomore David Otero, Jr. (Shelton, Conn.) relieved Martinez in the fifth and was awarded the win after 2.1 hitless innings with four strikeouts.

For Old Westbury, junior pitcher Daniel Aguilo (Elmont, N.Y.) pitched a complete game with three strikeouts and five hits.

Gaffney's walk-off double scored sophomore Domenic Palumbo (Plainview, N.Y.) from second base.

The Farmingdale State baseball team next will host Lehman in a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 20th at 4:00 p.m.
