Rams Move into Third Place in Skyline with Purchase Sweep

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Purchase College this afternoon. The Rams are now 13-13 overall and 7-5 in the Skyline, while the Panthers fell to 9-13, 5-7.

In the top of the first, the Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by senior center fielder Anthony Alvino (Lindenhurst, N.Y.). After a Michael Marino infield single, freshman second baseman Domenic Palumbo (Plainview, N.Y.) stole home to increase the lead to 2-0. An unearned run put Farmingdale State on top 3-0 before left fielder Richard Sullivan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) hit an RBI triple to left center which scored junior first baseman Dalton McCarthy (Manorville, N.Y.). Sophomore designated hitter Matteo Gaudio (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and sophomore catcher Kenneth Johntry (Yaphank, N.Y.) each followed with RBI singles to give the Rams a 6-0 lead.

Farmingdale State added a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single to center by Marino.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Rams took an 8-0 lead after a sac fly by sophomore third baseman Charles O'Neil (North Babylon, N.Y.).

Farmingdale State added two runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn the 10-0 run-rule win.

Palumbo led the way after going 4-for-5 at the plate with 3 runs scored, while Gaudio was 4-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Marino finished with two hits, a run scored and RBI. Sophomore pitcher Matt Seelinger (Levittown, N.Y.) earned the win after allowing no runs on two hits, striking out nine in seven innings of work.

In game two, trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, the Rams tied the game on a Palumbo sac fly to center. Marino followed with an RBI single to center which scored Johntry and gave Farmingdale State a 2-1 edge. In FSC's next at-bat, McCarthy hit an RBI single to right field to increase the lead to 3-1.

The Panthers closed to within one after scoring a run in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, freshman center fielder Ryan Osborne (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and sophomore designated hitter Nick Osburn (East Islip, N.Y.) tripled to right center to bring the Rams lead back to two, 4-2. Farmingdale State added the final run of the game on an RBI single by senior shortstop Tom Rydzewski (Franklin Square, N.Y.).

Osburn was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while McCarthy had two hits and a run batted in. Freshman pitcher Ryan O'Connor (Babylon, N.Y.) recorded the win and improved to 4-1 on the season after two innings of relief allowing zero earned runs on one hit. Senior Alex Pangourelias (Briarwood, N.Y.) earned his fourth save after pitching a perfect 1.1 innings to close out the game.

The Rams next will travel to Staten Island for a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 22nd at 5:00 p.m.
