Rams Fall to RPI in New York Regional

#7 RPI - 6, #4 Farmingdale State - 5


Auburn, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team fell, 6-5, this afternoon to RPI in the 2013 NCAA New York Regional. The Rams have been eliminated and finished the year with a 29-15 record.

Tied 2-2 in top of the fifth, the Rams led off the inning with a Justin Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) walk and took a 3-2 lead with a one out RBI single to left center by senior catcher Eric Wiener (Deer Park, N.Y.). In Farmingdale State's next at-bat, sophomore second baseman Mike Scarlato (Holbrook, N.Y.) singled to left, before senior left fielder David Zilnicki (Riverhead, N.Y.) walked to load the bases. Sophomore shortstop Anthony Alvino (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) put the Rams on top 5-2 with a 2 RBI single through the right side.

RPI answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and tied the game at 5-5 in the eighth inning as sophomore Tyler Listing (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) walked with the bases loaded. Sophomore Adam Kalish (Clifton Park, N.Y.) gave RPI a 6-5 lead with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field. 

Farmingdale State was unable to score the game-tying run in the ninth as RPI advanced with a 6-5 victory.

Wiener was 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI, while Alvino had one hit and two runs batted in. Senior starting pitcher Anthony Eilers (Bay Shore, N.Y.) threw 5.1 innings, allowing no earned runs on five hits.

RPI was led by junior Al Mersman (Newark, Del.) who was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman Nick Annunziata (Neshanic Station, N.J.) had three hits, a run scored and two runs batted in.
