Former Major Leaguer Keith Osik named Head Baseball Coach at Farmingdale State

Mike Harrington, Director of Athletics at Farmingdale State, is pleased to announce that former Major League baseball player Keith Osik has been named Head Baseball Coach at Farmingdale State.
Osik finished his major league career in 2004 with the Baltimore Orioles. He spent his first seven years with the Pittsburgh Pirates and one year with the Milwaukee Brewers. Primarily a catcher, he also played seven other positions during his career. Osik, who made his major league debut with Pittsburgh in 1996, was selected by the Texas Rangers out of high school and selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 24th round after his junior year of College.
Osik played three years at Louisiana State University where he was an All-Southeast Conference selection at catcher in his junior year. He started at shortstop his freshman year with the Tigers and at third base his sophomore season. Osik played all nine positions in a game against Northeast Louisiana during his junior year and was the pitcher of record in a 6-5, 11-inning loss.
He is a graduate of Shoreham-Wading River High School where he led the Wildcats to the 1987 State Championship and was the recipient of the Yastrzemski Award which is presented to the most outstanding baseball player in Suffolk County.
Osik replaces Ken Rocco who was the coach at Farmingdale since 1971.
Nick Barone Named to All-Region Baseball Team

Sophomore third basemen Nick Barone (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) was selected to the 2005 NCAA Baseball New York Region Division III ABCA/Rawlings All-Star Team. Nick was named to the Third Team, after averaging .367 with one homerun, 26 runs batted in, 12-of-14 stolen bases and 58 total bases during the season.
Baseball End of Season Report

The Rams finished the 2005 season with a record of 7-22. The team was plagued by injuries this year, starting with a roster of 23 and finishing the year with only 14. The Rams initiated the new baseball stadium on May 2nd against Old Westbury and it didn’t take long before the first homerun was hit out of the new stadium on May 3rd by freshman Rich Santoro.
Two Rams were recognized during the season in the Skyline. Steven Corvetti, who led the Rams in hitting, was named Player of the Week and freshman right-hander Jesse Scott was named Rookie of the Week after throwing a no-hitter against Stevens. This marked Farmingdale’s third no-hitter in the past two years.
Nick Barone broke the school record for triples with 6 and was named First Team All-Skyline from his third base position. Senior captain Anthony Scali capped a brilliant four-year career finishing the year third on the team in hitting and provided gold-glove defense from his centerfield position. Barone, Santoro, and freshman shortstop Luis Feliciano had solid seasons for Farmingdale and provide a bright future for years to come.
The winners of the baseball awards at Farmingdale State's Athletic Banquet were as follows: Steve Corvetti and Nick Barone won the Offense Award, Anthony Scali won the MVP and the Gold Glove Award.
Nick Barone Named 1st Team All-Skyline

Sophomore Nick Barone (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) was named First Team All-Skyline Conference for baseball.
Barone, who broke the school record for triples this season, was the starting third basemen for the Rams. He led the team in doubles (10), triples (6), RBI’s (26), and on-base percentage (.469). In Skyline play, he led the team with 25 hits, 8 doubles, 4 triples and 19 RBI's. On Tuesday, May 3rd against Staten Island, Barone hit for the cycle including two triples.

Farmingdale sophomore Nick Barone (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) broke the school record for triples today, as his sixth triple of the season drove in the Rams winning run in the 8-6 come-from-behind rally in game one of a conference double-header against Mount Saint Vincent (15-18, 11-11 Skyline). Farmingdale lost the second game 10-4 and finished the 2005 season with a 7-22 record overall, 5-17 in the Skyline.
Barone finished with two hits and 3 RBI’s in game one for Farmingdale, while Rich Santoro (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) finished with two RBI’s in game two.
Mount Saint Vincent’s Tanner Munroe (Milford, CT/Foran) had two hits, including a homerun in game one, while Logan Mauzy (Homer, NY/Homer Central) finished with two RBI’s in game two.
Baseball Falls to Old Westbury

The Rams baseball team fell to 6-21, 4-16 Skyline after a loss to conference rival Old Westbury (16-19, 11-9 Skyline) on Wednesday afternoon at Panther Park in Old Westbury, NY. The Panthers scored a run in the first and led 1-0 after six innings, before scoring a combined nine runs over the next two innings to take a commanding lead. Old Westbury senior right-hander Richard Ruiz (Bronx, NY) threw a five-hitter, striking out three in the 10-0 victory. Junior Rob Knips (Commack, NY) led the Panthers with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
Farmingdale’s Rob Piervinanzi (New Hyde Park, NY/Herricks) led the team with two hits and a walk. Senior captain Anthony Scali (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) relieved Eric Boyajian (Middletown, NY/Minisine) in the eighth inning. This was Scali's third relief appearance in as many games.
The Rams host Mount Saint Vincent for their final games of the season on Thursday, May 5th, a double-header starting at 2:00pm.
Jesse Scott Named Skyline Rookie of the Week

Freshman right-hander Jesse Scott (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) allowed just four hits and one earned run in 13.1 innings (0.68 ERA) last week. Scott pitched a no-hitter against Stevens on Friday, but came up on the losing end of a 1-0 score. The only run of the game scored on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Scott also allowed four hits and two unearned runs in 6.1 innings against St. Joseph’s.

Farmingdale State freshman Rich Santoro (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) hit the first homerun out of Farmingdale’s new turf field, a shot to centerfield, in the Rams 14-11 win over Staten Island on Tuesday afternoon. Another first for the books, Rams sophomore Nick Barone (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) hit for the cycle, including two triples and the second homerun of the day. Farmingdale State improves to 6-20 overall, while Staten Island falls to 22-13.
Barone finished the game 5-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI’s. Santoro had three hits, three runs scored and three RBI’s. Freshman Luis Feliciano (Bronx, NY/Park West) had two hits and four stolen bases for the Rams. Joseph Bono (Selden, NY/St. Anthony’s) picked up the win after throwing 8.1 innings, before senior Anthony Scali (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) pitched the final two outs for his first career save.
For Staten Island, Mike Liconti (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s) hit the third homerun of the game and finished with two RBI’s. Joseph Ruiz (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) led the team with three hits.

Farmingdale State fell to 5-20, 4-15 Skyline after losing 12-8 to SUNY rival Old Westbury (14-18, 9-9 Skyline) in a conference home game on the new Farmingdale turf field. The Rams trailed 7-5 after seven innings, before scoring one in the eighth to make it 7-6. The Panthers sealed the victory with a five-run ninth inning rally. Old Westbury's Zach Flinn (Levittown, NY) pitched five innings for the win, while freshman Josh Deitch (Melville, NY/Hills East) took the loss for the Rams.
John Decrescenzo (Brooklyn, NY) led the Panthers with four hits, while Ricardo Pena (New York, NY) finished with three runs batted in for Old Westbury. Batting in the lead off spot for the Panthers, Felix Tatis (Brooklyn, NY) had three hits, 2 RBI's and two runs scored.
Patrick Manganaro (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) led the Rams with three RBI's, while Nick Barone (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) finished with two hits and three stolen bases. Rob Pisaneschi (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach) pitched four relief innings for Farmingdale and Eric Boyajian (Middletown, NY/Minisine) faced two batters in the ninth, before senior captain Anthony Scali (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) made his pitching debut for the final three outs of the ninth inning.
Scali was impressive in the Rams first game on the new turf field, starting at centerfield, moving to shortstop in the seventh inning and finishing up the game on the mound. Scali went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four stolen bases.
The Rams will host Staten Island on Tuesday, May 3rd at 3:30pm in a non-conference single game.
Jesse Scott Tosses No-Hitter

Freshman pitcher Jesse Scott (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) tossed a no-hitter in game two of a Skyline Conference baseball doubleheader against Stevens. Farmingdale State fell in both games to the Ducks, 3-1 and 1-0, on Friday afternoon.
With the sweep, Farmingdale fell to 5-19 overall, 4-14 in the Skyline. Stevens improved to 22-12 overall and set a school record for wins in a season. The 2002 NCAA Tournament team held the old mark with 21 wins. Stevens also improved to 14-6 in Skyline Conference play and clinched a spot in the league’s four-team double-elimination tournament.
GAME 1 – STEVENS 3, FARMINGDALE STATE 1: Gerard Moreno (5-2) gave up just five hits and one walk in 7 1/3 innings as Stevens earned a 3-1 extra-inning victory in the opener.
With the score knotted at 1-1, sophomore shortstop Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) led off the top of the eighth inning – the first extra inning – with a double. Freshman designated hitter John Frustaci (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Paramus Catholic) dropped down a sacrifice bunt, moving Sandt to third. Sophomore third baseman Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J./Abesgami) followed with a high chopper to third and Sandt beat the throw to the plate to put Stevens ahead 2-1. Sophomore second baseman Andrew Tesoriero (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) gave the Ducks an insurance run with an RBI single later in the inning.
Tesoriero scored on an RBI single by freshman catcher David Katusa (Franklin Township, N.J./Franklin Township) in the top of the fifth to give Stevens a 1-0 lead. Farmingdale answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring its only run against Stevens pitching to tie the game at 1-1.
GAME 2 – STEVENS 1, FARMINGDALE STATE 0:
Farmingdale State freshman Jesse Scott (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) tossed a no-hitter in the second game, but Stevens pushed across the game’s only run without a hit in the top of the first inning. Senior second baseman Jeff Drobik (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and went to third on a groundout by Katusa. He came home on a sacrifice fly by junior center fielder Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) as the Ducks gave Waterman the only run he would need.
Waterman worked into the seventh inning, lowering his season ERA to 1.89 before giving way to Sandt who got the final two outs to complete the sweep.
The Rams host Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday afternoon for a double-header at noon, before hosting Old Westbury on Monday, May 2nd at 3:30pm for the first game in the new baseball stadium.

The Rams (5-15, 4-10 Skyline) took a quick 1-0 lead in the first, but could not get the offense going throughout the next eight innings, in a 13-1 loss to Old Westbury (11-17, 7-8 Skyline). Sophomore Greg Jones led the Panthers with four hits (two doubles and a triple) and knocked in five runs. Senior pitcher Richard Ruiz took the win going 8.1 innings with five strikeouts.

Six Student-Athletes at Farmingdale Receive Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Awards

The State University of New York’s Chancellor, Robert L. King, recently named six of Farmingdale State’s student-athletes as winners of the 2004-05 Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Awards. The Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award was created to recognize academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement. One student-athlete was chosen in each sport from one of four SUNY colleges, including Farmingdale State, Old Westbury, Purchase and Maritime. In addition to academic excellence, the student-athlete must have been named to any of the following: the All-Conference Team, All Tournament Team, MVP, etc., in order to be nominated for this award. This year’s winners from Farmingdale State were Reggie Routier (Indoor Track), Melissa Rudy (Volleyball), Patric Santiago (Golf), Anthony Scali (Baseball), Alberto Soberanes (Cross Country) and Devan Weber (Softball). The Chancellor will be honoring these recipients at The 2005 Scholar-Athlete Awards on Monday, April 25th at the Wyndham Hotel in East Syracuse, New York.
Senior Anthony Scali (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa Park) has been the captain of the baseball team for the past three seasons and has a 3.44 GPA. Last season, Scali was named Second Team All-Skyline after leading the Rams with a .343 batting average, including 34 hits along with 14 stolen bases. Scali provided outstanding defense in centerfield and at shortstop, and this season holds the starting position at centerfield and has filled in at first base as well. Scali is already leading the team in multiple statistical categories for the 2005 season.

Sophomore Nick Barone (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) and senior Anthony Scali (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa Park) joined the NCAA Division III Baseball Rankings as of April 17th.
Barone is ranked 25th in doubles per game (0.5) and 23rd for triples per game (0.19). Barone is currently batting .309 and has a total of eight doubles and two triples over 16 games this season.
Scali is ranked 30th in the nation for stolen bases with 0.67 per game. He has a total of 14 stolen bases in 16 attempts.
Errors Haunt Farmingdale in Conference Loss

Farmingdale State (5-14, 4-9 Skyline) suffered a 3-0 conference loss to St. Joseph’s College on April 20th. The Rams had a rough day on the field, getting picked off three times and finishing with six fielding errors. John Migliorski was awarded the win for St. Joe’s after pitching eight scoreless innings and striking out six batters. Keith Gottschalk (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) took the loss for Farmingdale, despite allowing no earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched.
Hits for the Rams came from Nick Barone (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) and Jeremy Small (Levittown, NY/Island Trees).

The Rams dropped to 4-12, 3-7 Skyline after losing two more games to visiting Kings Point (8-13, 6-5 Skyline) on April 16th at Farmingdale’s Bill Byrne Field. Freshman J.B. Zorn picked up his second win against the Rams this season, pitching 2.2 innings in the first game. L.J. Fioravanti pitched a shutout in game two for a 7-0 victory to complete the three game series for the season.

Baseball Field Nearing Completion

Farmingdale State's new baseball field is nearing completion. This week the Field Turf is being put down and should be finished in a couple of days. After that, the warning track will be filled in and we will be waiting to play the inaugural games on the new field whenever clearance is granted.

A six run sixth-inning for the Kings Point Mariners (6-13, 4-5 Skyline) gave relief pitcher J.B. Zorn the 9-6 victory to take a conference win from Farmingdale State (4-10, 3-5 Skyline) on April 14th in Kings Point, NY. Bobby Neelon led the Mariners with 3 runs batted in, while Harlow Wood and Kellan Lancaster drove two runs in each. Farmingdale’s Nick Barone (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) had two doubles and two runs batted in. Freshman Rich Santoro (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) knocked in two runs off two hits and scored one run. Keith Gottschalk (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) took the loss for the Rams, but not before striking out six batters over 5.2 innings.

Stephen Corvetti Named Skyline Player of the Week

Farmingdale State sophomore Stephen Corvetti (Rockville Centre, NY/Southside) was named Skyline Player of the Week for baseball on April 11th. Corvetti batted. 400 (12-for-30) with seven doubles, a home run, 15 RBI and a .733 slugging percentage in seven games last week. Corvetti had at least one hit and one RBI in all seven games. In two Skyline Conference doubleheaders over the weekend, he had five doubles, a home run and nine runs batted in as the Rams improve to 3-2 in conference play. Corvetti is batting .364 with a team-leading 19 RBI for the season.

In the second meeting of the season between these two baseball teams, Farmingdale State (4-7, 3-2 Skyline) came away with two more wins against Maritime (1-11, 0-8 Skyline) after a conference double-header in Throggs Neck, NY on Sunday afternoon. The Rams hit two home-runs in game two, scoring a combined 11 runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Sophomore Stephen Corvetti (Rockville Centre, NY/Southside) hit the first home-run of the game in the third inning, before freshman Rich Santoro (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to give the Rams an 11-2 lead. In the second game, freshman pitcher Josh Deitch (Melville, NY/Hills East) threw a complete game, striking out 13 batters in the 16-3 victory.

In game two, Farmingdale trailed 13-3 in the top of the seventh before scoring seven runs and falling 13-10. Sophomore Stephen Corvetti (Rockville Centre, NY/Southside) led the Rams with four runs batted in and five hits, while senior Anthony Scali (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) had five hits and scored three runs.

Farmingdale State improved their record to 2-5 overall this afternoon with a 16-4 win over Baruch College (0-3) in a non-conference baseball game in Farmingdale, NY. Freshman Jon Kishanuk (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) pitched four innings for the win and is now 1-0 after his first start of the season. Freshman Luis Feliciano (Bronx, NY/Park West) scored the first run of the game for Farmingdale, taking a lead-off walk and coming in off a Bill Jansen (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach) RBI single. The Rams would then score five runs in the second, four in the third and three in the fourth to take a commanding 12-2 lead into the fifth inning.
Senior captain Anthony Scali (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) had two hits for Farmingdale, bringing in four runs and scoring twice. Feliciano had two walks and two hits in four at-bats, and now leads the team in on-base percentage. Sophomore Nick Barone finished with three hits and three runs batted in.

Baseball Comes Up Short Against William Paterson

The Rams baseball team fell to 1-5 overall after a 9-7 non-conference loss against visiting William Paterson (8-5) on Wednesday afternoon. With the game scoreless going into the fourth inning, William Paterson’s senior catcher Anthony Mazzo (Emerson, NJ/Emerson Boro) and freshman third basemen Anthony Cacciola (Washington Township, NJ/Bergen Catholic) hit back-to-back solo homeruns for the 2-0 lead. Mazzo enjoyed the first multi-home run game of his career, slugging another shot in the fifth inning to lead the team with 2 RBI’s and three runs scored. Farmingdale trailed 5-0, but came back with 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to two runs. Both teams scored four runs in the seventh, and would not score in the final two innings, to give William Paterson the eventual victory.

Farmingdale State (1-4) fell 11-5 against FDU-Florham (5-2) in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon. FDU’s Jim DaSilva (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) and Rob Porcaro (Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville) led the offense with a combined 5 RBI’s and three runs scored. Farmingdale was tied 1-1 after two at-bats, before giving up eight runs in the second inning.
Gary Block (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) and Rob Piervinanzi (New Hyde Park, NY/Herricks) both recorded two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Freshman Jesse Scott (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) relieved Keith Gottschalk (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) in the second inning and pitched 5.1 innings of relief, striking out seven batters and only allowing two runs.

The Farmingdale State baseball team fell to 1-3 overall after losing both games to Keystone College in a non-conference double-header in LaPlume, Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon. Keystone went ahead 5-2 in the third inning and would take game one by a score of 7-3. In game two, the Rams were behind by five runs after three innings and would fall by a final score of 14-6.
The Rams travel to Centenary College on Saturday, April 2nd for a Skyline Conference Double-header at noon. They will host the College of Mt. St. Vincent in a Skyline Double-header on Sunday, April 3rd at noon.
Rams Baseball Falls to Kean in Home Opener

Farmingdale State fell to 1-1 overall after dropping a non-conference game to Kean University (11-3) 14-8. Kean held a 5-0 lead after three innings, before the Rams came back to score four runs in the bottom of the third, forcing a pitching change by the Cougars. Kean outscored the Rams 9-4 over the next five innings and the game was called after eight innings of play due to darkness.
Kean’s Steve Wohltman (West New York, NJ/Memorial) picked up the win for the Cougars. Aaron Richard (Plainfield, NJ/St. Joseph’s) finished hitting 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Anthony Puzzo (Lacey, NJ/Lacey) also went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. David Adamo (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) hit 1-for-4 with a double and 3 runs batted in.
The Rams were led by senior captain Anthony Scali (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) hitting 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Sophomore Steve Corvetti (Rockville Centre, NY/Southside) went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.
Farmingdale State hosts Utica – Rome on Friday, March 25th in a double-header starting at noon.
Baseball Defeats Maritime College in Season Opener

The Farmingdale State (1-0) baseball team defeated Skyline opponent Maritime College (1-1) 10-3 on Saturday afternoon, March 19th in their season opening game. The Rams total of 16 walks was the deciding factor in the game. Farmingdale led 3-0 going into the fourth inning before Maritime scored three runs off two extra base hits to tie it up at 3-3. Joe Bono (Selden, NY/St. Anthony’s) picked up the win for the Rams, while Keith Gottschalk (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) came in as the reliever and pitched four hitless innings for the save with seven strikeouts and only two walks.
Farmingdale State senior captain Anthony Scali (Massapequa Park, NY) went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, four stolen bases and two runs scored. Sophomore Steve Corvetti (Rockville Centre, NY/Southside) had the Rams only extra base hit with a triple in the third inning. He finished 1-for-4 with 2 RBI’s and one run scored. Freshman Luis Feliciano (Bronx, NY/Park West) had four walks and two stolen bases.
Maritime’s Peter McGrath led the team with 2 RBI’s and one run scored, hitting a 2 RBI double in the fourth inning and scoring off a single by Chris Stanco.
Farmingdale State will host Kean University in their home opener on Tuesday, March 22nd at 3:00pm.
