Freshman pitcher Jesse Scott (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) tossed a no-hitter in game two of a Skyline Conference baseball doubleheader against Stevens. Farmingdale State fell in both games to the Ducks, 3-1 and 1-0, on Friday afternoon.
With the sweep, Farmingdale fell to 5-19 overall, 4-14 in the Skyline. Stevens improved to 22-12 overall and set a school record for wins in a season. The 2002 NCAA Tournament team held the old mark with 21 wins. Stevens also improved to 14-6 in Skyline Conference play and clinched a spot in the league’s four-team double-elimination tournament.
GAME 1 – STEVENS 3, FARMINGDALE STATE 1: Gerard Moreno (5-2) gave up just five hits and one walk in 7 1/3 innings as Stevens earned a 3-1 extra-inning victory in the opener.
With the score knotted at 1-1, sophomore shortstop Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) led off the top of the eighth inning – the first extra inning – with a double. Freshman designated hitter John Frustaci (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Paramus Catholic) dropped down a sacrifice bunt, moving Sandt to third. Sophomore third baseman Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J./Abesgami) followed with a high chopper to third and Sandt beat the throw to the plate to put Stevens ahead 2-1. Sophomore second baseman Andrew Tesoriero (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) gave the Ducks an insurance run with an RBI single later in the inning.
Tesoriero scored on an RBI single by freshman catcher David Katusa (Franklin Township, N.J./Franklin Township) in the top of the fifth to give Stevens a 1-0 lead. Farmingdale answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring its only run against Stevens pitching to tie the game at 1-1.
GAME 2 – STEVENS 1, FARMINGDALE STATE 0:
Farmingdale State freshman Jesse Scott (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) tossed a no-hitter in the second game, but Stevens pushed across the game’s only run without a hit in the top of the first inning. Senior second baseman Jeff Drobik (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and went to third on a groundout by Katusa. He came home on a sacrifice fly by junior center fielder Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) as the Ducks gave Waterman the only run he would need.
Waterman worked into the seventh inning, lowering his season ERA to 1.89 before giving way to Sandt who got the final two outs to complete the sweep.
The Rams host Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday afternoon for a double-header at noon, before hosting Old Westbury on Monday, May 2nd at 3:30pm for the first game in the new baseball stadium.
