2009 Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award Winners

Albany, N.Y. - The State University of New York's Chancellor recently named six of Farmingdale State's student-athletes as winners of the 2009 Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award. The Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award was created to recognize outstanding academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement. Recipients were selected after a thorough review of their credentials and accomplishments by athletic directors from across the State University System. In addition to academic excellence, the student-athlete must have been named to any of the following: the All-Conference Team, All Tournament Team, MVP, etc., in order to be nominated for this award.
This year's winners from Farmingdale State were: Oshea Davis
(Women’s Tennis), Patrick Gubbins (Men's Soccer), Larry Hipp
(Men's Golf), Mike Labrozzi (Baseball), Arielle Morelli (Softball)
and Justine Rothar (Women's Lacrosse).
Oshea Davis (Hempstead, N.Y./Freeport) - Davis, a
senior on the women's tennis team, graduated with a 3.43 GPA from
the Bioscience program. She received First Team All-Skyline honors
this season. Davis was the number one singles player for the Rams
and posted a 6-4 record. At first doubles, she finished 10-1
overall, 6-1 in the conference.
Patrick Gubbins (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) - Gubbins, a junior on the men's soccer team, holds a 3.43 GPA in the Criminal Justice program. He was named Second Team All-Skyline after posting a 13-6-2 record as the teams’ starting goalkeeper. In 1818 minutes played, he allowed just 23 goals with a 1.14 goals against average and a .807 save percentage.
Larry Hipp (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) - Hipp, a junior on the men's golf team, holds a 3.95 GPA in the Security Systems program. He finished 8th in the Skyline Conference Championship, shooting scores of 86 and 78 in the two-day Tournament, to earn him Second Team All-Skyline honors and help the Rams win their second Skyline Conference Championship in three years.
Mike Labrozzi (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) - Labrozzi, a junior on the baseball team, holds a 3.59 GPA in the Business Management program. In 2008, Labrozzi was named First-Team All-Skyline and Second-Team All New York Region, after hitting .393 for the season and posting a .616 slugging percentage. He led the team with 11 triples, four doubles and two homeruns, while knocking in a second best 31 RBI's. This season, his team won their second straight Skyline Championship, their first-ever Regional Championship and advanced to the Division III World Series.
Arielle Morelli (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) - Morelli, a sophomore on the softball team, holds a 3.39 GPA in the Liberal Arts program. She was named Second Team All-Skyline in 2008, after batting .373 in one of the best seasons in school history for the Rams. Last season, she had 44 hits including a team-leading 14 doubles, and made just 2 errors in 168 chances. This season her team won their first-ever Skyline Championship and won two games in the Regional Tournament.
Justine Rothar (Levittown, N.Y./Division Ave.) - Rothar, a sophomore on the women's lacrosse team, holds a 3.71 GPA in the Nursing program. She was named Second-Team All-Skyline after her freshman campaign in 2008, scoring 32 goals and 12 assists for a team-leading 44 points. This season, she was named a Team Captain, broke the single-season scoring record with 82 points, was named the Skyline Player of the Year and helped her team to a first-ever Skyline Championship.
