Farmingdale, N.Y. - Just 1:25 into overtime, sophomore forward Julissa Martinez (Brentwood, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal to lead the Farmingdale State women's soccer team past St. Joseph's-Long Island, 1-0, this afternoon. With the win, FSC improved to 6-3-2 overall and 3-0 in Skyline Conference play.
In a scoreless first half, the Rams outshot the Golden Eagles (6-4-1, 4-1 Skyline), 15-4, as St. Joe's-LI senior goalie Juliana Cintron-Leonardo (Riverhead, N.Y.) made seven saves.
In the 63rd minute, Farmingdale State junior midfielders Molly Dowd (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Brittney Starzee (Babylon, N.Y.) recorded back-to-back shots but were unable to find the back of the net. Dowd took a shot from 15 yards out that was partially blocked by a Golden Eagles defender before Starzee corralled the loose ball and took a shot that was saved by Cintron-Leonardo.
Just 31 seconds later, Cintron-Leonardo tallied another save as she stopped Rams' junior midfielder Alexandra Johnson's (Commack, N.Y.) attempt.
Over the final 25 minutes, Cintron-Leonardo tallied three more saves as the game headed to overtime tied at 0-0.
In OT, Farmingdale State freshman midfielder Celina Schenk (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) drove up the middle of the field before passing it ahead to junior midfielder Cailyn Demarinis (Deer Park, N.Y.). Demarinis used a chip pass ahead to Martinez who buried the goal to give Farmingdale State the 1-0 win. Martinez recorded her third game-winning goal of the season and now has six for her career.
Farmingdale State senior goalkeeper Daniella Ford (Elmont, N.Y.) registered two saves in the shutout victory, while Cintron-Leonardo tallied 12 saves in defeat.
The Rams next travel to conference opponent Sarah Lawrence on Tuesday, October 8th at 7:00 p.m.
