Guerrero and Lijo Lead Rams Past Golden Eagles

Farmingdale, N.Y. - In a Skyline Conference women's soccer matchup this evening, Farmingdale State defeated St. Joseph's (L.I.), 2-0. With the win, the Rams improve to 6-5-2 overall, 4-1 in conference play. The Golden Eagles fall to 5-7-1, 4-3 in the Skyline.

In a scoreless first half, Farmingdale State outshot St. Joe's, 5-1, while the Rams recorded the only shot on goal in the half.

Early in the second, Farmingdale had a nice opportunity as junior midfielder Amanda Khare (Deer Park, N.Y.) sent a cross to senior forward Ashlee Thompson (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.). Another Rams opportunity came at the 31-minute mark with a shot to the left side by junior forward Ashley Guerrero (East Meadow, N.Y.), saved by a diving Katie McGarrell (Selden, N.Y.).

Guerrero capitalized on her next shot, with 29:45 remaning, after junior defender Alexandria Tudisco (Massapequa, N.Y.) sent a thru ball up to the streaking Guerrero and her blast to the top left corner from 20 yards out gave Farmingdale State the 1-0 advantage.

In the 82nd minute, senior midfielder Melissa Lijo (Flushing, N.Y.) dodged two defenders and sent a shot into the bottom right corner to increase the Rams lead to 2-0.

Freshman goalkeeper Karla Gomes (Carle Place, N.Y.) stopped two shots for the Rams, while senior Katie McGarrell had five saves in defeat.

The women's soccer team next will travel to Old Westbury for a conference game on Friday, October 16th at 3:00 p.m.
