Rams Capture Eighth Straight Women’s Soccer Championship

Purchase, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's soccer team captured their eighth straight Skyline Conference Championship with a 2-1 victory over Mount Saint Mary College (14-5-1) this afternoon at the Fall Festival hosted by Purchase College. With the win, the Rams (14-5-3) receive the Conference's automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.

The Rams opened the scoring in the second minute of the game as sophomore forward Alena Gannon (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored on a through ball from junior midfielder Shannon Murphy (North Babylon, N.Y.).

The Knights answered at the 12:14 mark as freshman defender Destiny Ribadeneyra (Maybrook, N.Y.) scored a top-shelf goal from 40 yards out to tie the game at 1-1.

Three minutes later, junior forward and Tournament MVP Ashlee Thompson (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) put the Rams ahead for good, 2-1, with a header off a cross in front from Gannon.

Farmingdale State took the 2-1 advantage into the halftime break. Both teams had five shots in an evenly played scoreless second half, as the Rams clinched their eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth.
