Russo Leads Scranton Past Rams in OT

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Senior forward Samantha Russo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal for Scranton with 1:30 remaining in overtime in a non-conference women's soccer game this afternoon in Farmingdale, N.Y.

Farmingdale State (4-4) took a 1-0 lead only 7:12 into the game on an unassisted goal by sophomore forward Ashlee Thompson (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.). Scranton (5-2) answered 2:35 later as freshman midfielder Kelly Egan (Essex Falls, N.J.) scored in front and both Shannon McKenna (Islip, N.Y.) and Russo recorded the assists. Thompson gave the Rams a 2-1 advantage on her second goal of the afternoon after being set up by freshman defender Sammy Valentino's (Highland, N.Y.) pass. Farmingdale State held a 2-1 lead at the halftime break.

With only 7:12 left in regulation, Royals freshman forward Kelsey Bacon (Macungie, Penn.) scored off a feed from sophomore forward Gianna Vitolo (Denville, N.J.) to tie the game. Neither team was able to score over the final seven minutes forcing overtime.

In overtime, Russo's shot to the bottom right corner to led Scranton to the 3-2 victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Breanna Blair (Littleton, Colo.) tallied five saves for Farmingdale State, while senior Kelsy McAnelly (West Chester, Penn.) had four saves for Scranton.

The Rams next will travel to Eastern for a non-conference game on Tuesday, September 24th at 3:30 p.m.
