Cortland Outlasts Rams in Double OT

Cortland, N.Y. - Junior forward Kelly Knight (Rochester, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal for Cortland 4:18 into the second overtime to lead the Red Dragons to a 3-2 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon. The Rams fell to 3-3 overall, while Cortland improved to 3-1-2 on the season.

Farmingdale State took an early 1-0 lead on a score by freshman midfielder Shannon Murphy (North Babylon, N.Y.) only 4:04 into the game. Senior midfielder Stacey Wood (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) would even the game at 1-1 scoring off the feed from Samantha Gardner (Fairport, N.Y.) with 30:36 remaining in the first half. Only 30 seconds later, freshman forward Ashlee Thompson (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) regained the lead for the Rams as she scored on a header off senior forward Christina Merrill's (Levittown, N.Y.) corner kick. The Red Dragons would answer and tie the game at 2-2 as Wood netted her second goal of the game with 19:18 to play before halftime. Cortland held a 9-6 shot advantage as the game remained tied 2-2 at the break.

Despite 18 second half shots by the Red Dragons, Farmingdale State held Cortland scoreless and forced overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Knight scored her first goal of the season to lead the Red Dragons to a 3-2 non-conference win.

Farmingdale State freshman goalkeeper Breanna Blair (Littleton, Colo.) recorded seven saves, including two in the second overtime period.

The Rams next will travel to Stevens on Tuesday, September 18th for a non-conference match at 4:00 p.m.
